St John’s Ev. Lutheran Church and School475 E. Herbert Ave. Salt Lake City, Utah 84110Web Address: Pastor Hank Malone 385-234-1931 HYPERLINK "mailto:rev.dr.hankmalone@" rev.dr.hankmalone@Jan. 1st 10 AM By phone 1(888) 788-0099 Meeting ID 89588427281 for Personal ID use “ # ”We have moved to Zoom and have established an 800 number for those who wish to use their phone to connect and not be charged long distance. The invitation link can also be used if you have a Wi-Fi connection. This will put us on one network and allows us to stay together, without trying to manipulate and coordinate two systems and equipment. The Zoom computer connection or 800 number is a way for you to have our service available to you and your family and friends even if they or you are out of town or state. 1(888)788-0099 is the free 800 phone number for connection. For Sunday worship the meeting ID is 83738568539, no personal ID is required. Just hit the # sign when asked for personal ID. If you have a smart phone you can enter with video connection or not. If you do not get in please call 385-234-1931 and I will try to help you with that. The easiest way to come on Zoom by computer is to have an invitation email with a link. You will need to send your email address to me or Susan, so we can send out an invitation with a link to our meeting on zoom. For all who have received this notice by email, we have it. If you notice someone missing from the email addresses in your email or want to invite someone you know, either forward this to them so they can join us in worship or send an email to Susan Roberts or Pastor Hank so we can include them in our ongoing email invitations if they desire. We are privileged and commanded by God and for our own good to worship Him. Worship is the highest art form and good work that humans can do before God. It brings us into God’s presence to confess sins and receive forgiveness as well as all His blessings for life now and in eternity maintaining eternal fellowship with God. Worship is not an entertainment activity, one where we sit back and watch, but it requires your active participation. Because of the second to second and a half lag-time between you and the source of the music or leading voice, unison participation requires us to mute our mic or cover the mouth piece as a congregation. One lead voice will be heard responding with which you are also to speak and sing out loud with as you can really participate. Our joyful noise is certainly heard by our Lord, but it is distracting to our worship concentration when we all join in as reoccurring echo that is all out of phase. Remember, worship is not worship unless you are involved in the worship acts, so don’t just watch, -- join in, listen and participate, and do not add to the noise but make it joyful in your and God’s presence. You will have opportunity to speak to and greet each other both before and after worship. The actual worship will start at 10 AM, but we will establish our meeting for you to connect as early as 9:45 AM. You will be connected to the waiting room and brought in by the host or co-host ASAP. Your wait time will be very short. Please join us; this will end up a good worship experience for you and without you we will be missing you.In these times of isolation and danger we give thanks to our God who tells us, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” We may not be able to understand the why, but we know that God is in our midst working to sustain us and turn this evil to our good. His Word is never broken; His promises are sure! His love for us assures us of victory over all that which would destroy body and soul. We are with Him, and He continues to gift us with life, body, soul, family, friends, and our church family. We have much to be thankful for. Because of the resurrection of our Lord, we need never fear our future. We can do all things through Him who strengthens and loves us. We have Joy and Peace in Jesus Christ! EPISTLE READING: Romans 1:1-7 1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, Who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of Holiness by His resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through Whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of His Name among all the nations, 6 including, you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.P: This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.ALLELUIA AND VERSE: (John 6:68 & Ps.103:1)C: Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. P: Alleluia. Alleluia. Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy Name. Alleluia! P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 6th chapter.C: Glory to You, O Lord. HOLY GOSPEL Matt.6:24-33 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. 25 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to You, O Christ.Sermon Hymn LSB 895 “Now Thank We All Our GodNow thank we all our God With hearts and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has done, In whom His world rejoices; Who from our mothers’ arms Has blest us on our way With countless gifts of love and still is ours today.Oh, may this bounteous God Through all our life be near us, With ever joyful hearts And blessed peace to cheer us And keep us in His grace And guide us when perplexed And free us from all ills In this world and the next! All praise and thanks to God The Father now be given, The Son, and Him who reigns With them in highest heaven, The one eternal God, Whom earth and heav’n adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.Sermon: “Tying up loose Ends and Starting New”APOSTLES’ CREEDP: Let us now confess our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed.C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heavenand sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life (+) everlasting. Amen.Prayer Hymn: LSB 386 “Now Sing We, Now Rejoice”Now sing we, now rejoice, Now raise to heav’n our voice; He from whom joy streameth Poor in a manger lies; Not so brightly beameth The sun in yonder skies. Thou my Savior art! Thou my Savior art!Come from on high to me; I cannot rise to Thee. Cheer my wearied spirit, O pure and holy Child; Through Thy grace and merit, Blest Jesus, Lord most mild, Draw me unto Thee! Draw me unto Thee! Now through His Son doth shine The Father’s grace divine. Death was reigning o’er us Through sin and vanity Till He opened for us A bright eternity. May we praise Him there! May we praise Him there!Oh, where shall joy be found? Where but on heav’nly ground? Where the angels singing With all His saints unite, Sweetest praises bringing In heav’nly joy and light. O, that we were there! Oh, that we were there!PRAYER OF THE CHURCH:(after each petition ending in Lord in your mercy-- the congregational response is):C: Hear our prayer. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.Offering Hymn of Praise LSB 397 “As with Gladness Men of Old”As with gladness men of old Did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed it light, Leading onward, beaming bright; So, most gracious Lord, may we Ever more be led by Thee.As with joyful steps they sped, Savior, to Thy lowly bed, There to bend the knee before Thee, whom heav’n and earth adore; So may we with willing feet Ever seek Thy mercy seat.As they offered gifts most rare At Thy cradle, rude and bare, So may we with holy joy, Pure and free from sin’s alloy, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to Thee, our heav’nly King.OFFERING: (As you are privileged, do contribute to our ministry by sending your offering in support of God’s ministry at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 475 East Herbert Ave., Salt Lake City, UT 84111) In the House of the Lord, the Offering is taken for the partnership with God in His ministry in our community and through this congregation.
