Competition Information

Eligibility

Any New York State high school student (Grade 10-12) and New York State college student (not yet 27 years of age as of October 1, 2007) is eligible. Entrants must be NYS residents or a resident student attending a school in NYS. Teacher membership in NYSMTA is not required. Concurrent MTNA competition entrants are not eligible to compete in the Empire State Competition.

Fees (non-refundable)

Students of NYSMTA members: High School–$25.00 Collegiate–$30.00

Students of non-NYSMTA members: High School–$50.00 Collegiate–$60.00

Adjudication

At their discretion, the judges may choose to declare no winner if the performance standards of the competitions are not met.

The decisions of the judges are final.

Postmark deadline is SEPTEMBER 11, 2007.

Changes in repertoire, in writing, will be accepted until September 11, 2007.

EMPIRE STATE COMPETITION REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS*

INSTRUMENTAL CATEGORY & PIANO CATEGORY

In all categories repertoire should demonstrate both sustained playing & technical agility.

Choose repertoire from 3 of the 5 following categories, one work of which must be contemporary.

1) Baroque 2) Classical 3) Romantic 4) Impressionist 5) Contemporary (since 1950) (required)

One composition or movement in each category fulfills the requirement.

Several short selections by the same composer may also be grouped together to form a category.

Concertos are not allowed in the piano category. Repertoire for prepared piano or repertoire

requiring additional equipment will not be accepted. Memorization is required for all works

in the Piano Category. Memorization is not required for the Instrumental Category except

for works that are originally for solo and orchestra.

➢ High School

Pieces from three (3) stylistic categories totaling a minimum of twenty (20) minutes. Audition time is 15 minutes.

➢ Collegiate

Pieces from three (3) stylistic categories totaling a minimum of thirty (30) minutes. Audition time is 20 minutes.

VOICE

➢ High School

Four (4) memorized selections in contrasting styles & languages, one of which must be in English. Audition time is 15 minutes.

➢ Collegiate

Four (4) memorized selections in contrasting styles & languages, one of which must be in English. In addition, two arias (one opera & one oratorio). Audition time is 15 minutes.

Due to time constraints, entrants in any category may be stopped by the adjudicators during the performance of any work.

Original scores must be provided for the judges. The Empire State Competition expects all entrants and accompanists to abide by the Federal Copyright Law. No photocopies will be allowed unless accompanied by a letter from the publisher. Exceptions to this provision must be approved by the competitions coordinator no later than October 1, 2007.

A list of accompanists will be provided upon request if you are unable to bring your own.

Deadline for requesting the accompanist list is September 11, 2007.

Travel and Accommodations

Contestants are responsible for their own travel and hotel arrangements.

Hotel information will be included with the competition schedule information which will be mailed in late September.

Binghamton University is located in the Town of Vestal, just one mile beyond the Binghamton city limits in the Southern Tier of Upstate New York.

Binghamton is located at the crossroads of I-81, I-88 and NY Rte 17, within easy reach of major metropolitan areas.

Binghamton is 50 miles from Ithaca, 72 miles from Syracuse, and about 200 miles from both New York and Philadelphia.

To Binghamton University - NY 17 to exit 70 S (Route 201) to traffic circle. Bear to the right, follow Route 201 to Route 434 East (Vestal Parkway). Turn right onto campus at traffic light.

To the Main Entrance: Go to traffic circle; bear right (follow sign pointing WEST). Turn at 1st left into parking lot "C" (next to Science IV), main entrance to the Anderson Center is at the end of lot "C".

Anderson Center Building is to the right of the traffic circle on Glenn G. Bartle Drive, take first left.
