Some Items of News That Show the Inclinations of

Buyers Here and There.

Fifty new numbers have been added to the line of teaching and concert music by the McKinley Music Co., Chicag-o. This gives dealers a wider range, which the musical public will appreciate. A new arrangement of prices to dealers has been communicated to the trade.

The success of the McKinley song hits continues in a satisfactory way, according to D. W. Foster, sales manager for the company. One of the winners has been made into talking machine records and music rolls by the prominent manufacturers. This is '"Pickaninny Blues." One of the winners in the current Q R S Co.'s music roll list is the number named.

The J. W. Jenkins Sons' Music Co., Kansas City, continue to be elated over the success of "Twelfth Street Rag," published by the company. The Kansas City publishers say they are selling the piece in

"A Castle in Dreamland"

Fox-trot Song. CHORUS.

Just a castle I'm building in Dreamland, A sweet little castle for two,

F. B. Lovett, music publisher at 169 Adams avenue, Detroit, reports the effects of his recent wide advertising on the sales of his admirable song numbers. The songs, "Love Is a Dream of Ages," "A Castle in Dreamland," and "Dixie Is Songland," provide a trio replete with the qualities to win. "Dear Land of Nowhere" is a classic waltz ballad which is also proving a strong favorite.

Mrs. Ray Grombacker is the progressive head of the Music Shop, Spokane, Wash., which has 5 growing sheet music department.

The Jerome H. Remick Co., music publishers, filed complaints recently against the American Theater Co. and W. S. Quimby, operating the Star Theater, both of Bellingham, Wash., asking for damages for alleged infringement of copyright on songs.

The Sherwood Music School, of Chicago, has established a branch in Lafayette, Ind., and Miss Elsie Ricks, who was recently elected a member of the faculty of the Sherwood school, will teach piano, using the Sherwood course.

HELD ON SERIOUS CHARGE.

Theft of $900 worth of musical instruments from the Soward-Anderson Company, Dayton, O., is charged against Hal W. Skinner, Vandalia, who was arranged in police court recently. He waived preliminary hearing and was bound over to the grand jury under $1,000 bond. Skinner entered the store, of which he was an employe, early Tuesday morning by means of a duplicate key, police say. Three saxophones, a Victrola and two clarinets were taken by him to a friend's room on Ludlow street, according to police. The instruments were recovered at that place along with a large quantity of records taken some time ago.

. AN OLD PUBLISHING FIRM.

Herman Darewski, the managing director of one of the youngest music publishing firms in London, Eng., has acquired a controlling interest in the business of Metzler & Co., which was established in 1788, and is believed to be the oldest music publishing firm in the country. About 50,000 pieces, ranging from grand opera to comic songs, have been published by the company in the last hundred years. They were the first publishers of Sir Arthur Sullivan's works.

PROUD OF PUBLISHING JOB.

London, Eng., papers point to the production of "Jamboree," the march composed by Herman Darewski for the Boy Scouts in the recent gathering of the scouts in England, as a "record job in music publishing." Within . twelve working hours it was composed, orchestrated, engraved, proofed, corrected, reengraved and printed, and by noon the following day it was played and on sale at Olympia.

"Smilin' Through," always well liked, is being sung more than ever since the appearance of Jane Cowl in Portland this week in the play of that name. Probably by suggestion, the interest in the song has been revived and the demand for it shows a marked increase. At Oregon Eilers Music house, Miss Sonneman, in charge of the sheet music department, says the popularity of the song has shown an increase ever since the announcement of Miss Cowl's appearance in the play was given. "Thank God for Gardens" (Del Rigo), which became very popular here after being sung by Galli-Curci this spring, "Dawn" (Curran), and "You Will Come Back to Me," a Sam Fox number, are among the best sellers at present.

The sheet music business has been extraordinarily good this summer, all dealers reporting splendid sales.

CONDUCTOR AND COMPOSER.

Walter Kransgrill, composer of "Havana Moon," a waltz song, is conductor of the St. Francis orchestra, San Francisco. The Florentine Music Co., San Francisco, has acquired the publishing rights to the song.

A NEW INVASION. German music hall artists are trying very hard to get on the "boards" in England again, according to Monte Bayly, organizer of the Variety Artists' Federation of Great Britain, recently. "We know it to be a fact that they are even endeavoring to come into the country under the guise of Czecho-Slovaks, but we are fully determined to prevent them getting a footing here again," said Mr. Bayly.
