COURSE SYLLABUS

INTERMEDIATE GUITAR

Mr. Signorelli

2014-15

MATERIALS:

1. Nylon string classical guitar

2. Guitar support (footstool, Gitano, Ergo play)

3. Black binder, dividers recommended

4. Mechanical pencils

5. H.O.T. book 2, (purchased from me, price TBD, checks made out to LCHS)

6. Metronome/Tuner (recommended)

If, for any reason, you are unable to attain the items listed above, please contact me ASAP.

PRACTICE

Students are expected to practice 30 minutes a day. Find a place in your house to practice and get in the habit of practicing regularly. Find a routine that involves warm up, reading, ensemble music, solo repertoire, and other class materials.

This is a basic outline of skills that will be taught and assessed. Material may be added or removed based on the instructor’s discretion. History, theory, singing, and listening will also be included in instruction.

EXPECTATIONS:

1. Respect me, each other, and the equipment at all times.

2. Be prepared. You will be expected to practice outside of class.

3. Participate in class discussion, rehearsal, and performance.

4. Help each other when necessary. Be positive influences on each other’s playing. Do not mock or discourage your peers.

5. Be on time and do your best to not miss class. New material will be presented each class. It is easy to fall behind. One class period will be allowed to make up work if one day is missed. Two to three class periods will be allowed to make up work if two or more days are missed.

6. All Loudoun County Public Schools Policies, as well as policies and procedures outlined in the student handbook will be adhered to.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ME:

GRADING

1. Materials Check (15pts/check): I will check for materials at random throughout the year. Students must have their black binder, footstool, and book. Each item is worth 5 points.

2. Homework/Classwork (10-25pts): Assignments consist of short compositions, written or internet assignments, and letters home. In the case of most assignments, students are given ample class time to work on them.

3. Dress Rehearsals (50pts): Dress rehearsals will take place after school on the day of the concerts. Attendance is also mandatory.

4. Evaluations (100pts): Playing evaluations are genarally given twice per quarter. They consist of technical exercises, solo pieces, or selections from ensemble pieces performed individually for the instructor or the class.

5. Quizzes (20-50pts): Quizzes are often, but not confined to, short playing assessments. They may also be written or aural assessments.

6. Concerts (100 pts): There will be two large ensemble concerts during the year. Attendance is mandatory. There is more information about concerts below.

7. Extra Credit: Extra Credit is generally given to students for attending non required concerts outside of school as well as participating and attending Guitar Showcases.

CONCERTS:

There will be two ensemble concerts during the school year that all students are required to attend. If a student is unable to attend the concert, I must be notified one week in advance. In order for a student to make up for points lost, the student will perform 1-2 solo classical guitar pieces, specified by the instructor, for the class.

CONCERT ATTIRE:

The Intermediate Guitar class will wear black pants, a black belt, black dress shoes, and a white button down dress shirt. Ladies may wear black skirts as long as they are of an appropriate length.

LCHS GUITAR LETTER FORM

Students participating in the LCHS guitar program have the opportunity to earn a letter. The requirements are as follows:

and character in and out of the guitar program.

All letters are given at the discretion of the instructor.
