Quick Reference Guide for the DynaVox V and V Max

Charging the Battery

1. Connect the two pieces of the DC adapter/charger.

2. With your device turned off, plug the charger jack into the charger port on the left side of your device.

3. Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet.

The amber LED on the front of the device will light up while the battery is charging. The light will go out when the battery is fully charged. You should get X hours of continuous use.

Restricting access to device menus (Main Menu and Modify) in the Title Bar:

1. Select the Main Menu (Blue Triangle) button.

2. Select Setup.

3. Select Setup Menu.

4. Select Interface Features.

5. Choose the Title Bar Tab.

Main Menu Button

[pic] The Main Menu button provides access to the menus in the V or VMax software.

To select a voice, change the volume, change the rate, or create a pronunciation exception:

1. Select the Main Menu(Blue Triangle) button.

2. Select Setup.

3. Select Speech Controls.

4. Adjust the Speech Controls settings as necessary.

To access the communication pages in the Page Navigator:

1. Select the Main Menu (Blue Triangle) button.

2. Select Setup.

3. Select Page Navigator.

4. In the left viewport, select the desired folder (Emergent, Context Dependent, Independent). You may need to expand each folder to choose the appropriate number of buttons per page.

5. The right viewport will fill with the names of pages that are included in the selected page set.

6. In the right viewport, select the name of the page you want to open. Always start with the main page (HINT: The main page will always be at the top of the list.).

7. Select Go To Page.

The Modify Button

[pic]The Modify button simplifies the programming process by allowing you to quickly program or edit an object (button, page, Message Window, Tabs, etc.).

To modify a button:

1. Make sure that you are on the communication page or popup you want to modify.

2. Select the green Modify button. The button will turn red to indicate that it is active.

3. Select the button you want to modify.

4. Use the options in the Modify Button menu to change the attributes of the selected item (Hint: The most important attributes of a button are the Label, Symbol, and Behavior).

To Swap a button:

1. Select the Blue Main Menu(Blue Triangle) Button.

2. Select Page Editing

3. Select Swap Button

4. Select the button you would like to move.

5. Then Select the button you would wish to swap it with

To hide a button:

1. Make sure that you are on the communication page or popup you want to modify.

2. Select the green Modify button. The button will turn red to indicate that it is active.

3. Select the button you want to modify.

4.The Modify Window will pop up.

5. In the bottom on the right side there is a place to select “Hidden”

6. Select Hidden and hit O.K.

7. The button will no longer show up on the screen

To Create New Pages:

1. Select the Main Menu(Blue Triangle) button.

2. Select Page Editing.

3. Select Quick Page. The Select Template menu will appear.

4. Choose a template that matches the layout of your active page set.

5. Choose Select. The system keyboard will appear.

6. Enter the name of your new page and Select OK.

7. Choose Fill from Text.

8. An Enter Label window will be presented and the first button on your page will be highlighted.

9. Select the text box in the Enter Label window to access the system keyboard. Enter the label for the first button and then select OK. If a symbol is associated with the label, it will be added to the button. If more than one symbol is associated with your label, a Select a Symbol menu will open. Select the symbol you would like to use. The selected symbol will be added to the button.

10. Follow the system prompts and the page will automatically be saved using the name you assigned to it. If you want to stop adding content to your communication page, select the Stop Asking button in the Enter Label window.

To Link Pages:

1. Go to the button that will become the “Go To” button.

2. Select the green Modify button.

3. Select Behaviors.

4. Select Go to Page.

5. Select Add.

6. The Select Pages menu will appear.

7. In the right viewport, locate the desired page.

8. Select OK.

To Record a Sound:

1. Select the Main Menu (Blue Triangle) button in the title bar.

2. Select Setup.

3. Select Tools Menu.

4. Select the Sound Browser button.

5. Select the New button.

6. Use the system keyboard to enter a name for the new sound file.

7. Select the OK button to close the system keyboard.

8. Select the OK button to begin recording. The device will begin to record immediately, so you can begin to speak as soon as you select the button.

• Note: The built-in microphone is behind the small hole to the left of the power button. You can also use a standard computer microphone plugged into the mic port on the left side of the unit.

• Note:  Select the Cancel button to stop recording and delete anything you have recorded so far. You will be returned to the Sound Browser menu. To try the recording again, start over with step 5.

9. When you are finished, select the OK button. A window will open, providing the following options:

10. Select the OK button to accept the recording, and continue to step 10.

11. Select the Playback button to review the recording.

12. Select the Record Again button to return to step 8 and record your message again.

13. After you have finished recording and selected the OK button, a window may briefly display the message: "Saving, please wait...". The new sound file will be listed in the viewport of the Sound Browser menu.

14. To listen to the new recording, select the name of the sound file in the viewport and then select the Play Sound button.

Select the OK button to close the Sound Browser menu.

Select the OK button to close the Tools menu.

Note: When you create your own custom sounds, they are stored in the Sounds folder inside the User Files folder on your device hard drive. The sound library provided by DynaVox is stored in the Sounds folder inside the Shared folder on your device hard drive

To Link Sound:

1. Go to the button that will become the “Go To” button.

2. Select the green Modify button.

3. Select Behaviors.

4. Select Multimedia.

5. Select Play Sound

6. Select the file name of the sound created

7. Hit OK

8. In the right viewport, you will see the file name

9. Select OK.

To Import a Picture:

Note: This answer assumes that the digital photo files have been copied to the USB storage device, that an external CD drive is attached to the unit to read a CD that has the photos on it and/or that the images have been saved to an Open device (i.e. the C drive).

To Use the Quick Import Feature, follow these steps:

1. Select the green Modify button from the title bar.

2. Select the button that you will import the symbol into.

3. Select the Symbol button.

4. Select the Quick Import button. 

5. If the image is stored on a USB storage device, follow these steps:

• Select the Show All Directories checkbox.

• In the left viewport, select the USB drive letter, external CD drive or navigate to the location of the saved photo files.

• In the right viewport, select the image file to be imported.

• Select OK.  The system keyboard will be displayed.

• Enter what you would like the image label to be and select OK.

6. Select OK to exit the Modify Button menu.

Backing Up

1. Select the Main Menu (Blue Triangle) button.

2. Select the Set Up button.

3. Select Set Up Menu.

4. Select the User Manager.

5. Select Backing Up the Selected User.

6. Select Yes to saving pictures and emails.

7. Click the box that says Show all Directories.

8. Highlight the flash drive (Please note, it will not be the C Drive)

9. Select the Name box and, and name the user.

10. Hit Ok
