Ear buds that go with the iPod produce pretty good sound but don't allow you to share your music with others. If you want to play music on your iPod and let everyone hear, you have to plug in an external speaker. The Vizio sound bar is a single-computer speaker system with a built-in amplifier, which is commonly used with TVs. However, the subtle shape of the Vizio sound bar also makes it easy to carry with you and use as a speaker for the iPod. Turn off the iPod. Plug the Vizio AC Adaptor into an electrical outlet (WALL) if you haven't already. Connect one end of the 3.5mm audio cable to the headphone jack on the iPod and the other end to the 3.5mm Audio In jack on the back of the Vizio sound. Priced at $999 (?999, about AU$1,599), it's certainly not the cheapest ticket in audio at the moment, but given that the OLED it goes from starts at about $2,000, it's catering to a designer-centric, costly crowd. Hands on video From the CT770 box is a diamond-shaped bar with sleek silver accents that takes up a fair piece of real estate. You can lay a soundbar exactly on the desktop or support it in the listening area. Just over 40 inches, the bar is far from the longest we've seen, but it stretches back a deep 4.5 inches when stacked flat, and that depth is all the more stressed when it's oriented vertically. We were pleased to see an arsenal of ports including three HDMI inputs, ARC HDMI output, digital optical input and 3.5mm analog input. CT770 ... occupies a fair chunk of real estate. As soon as we freed the bar from its rather large box, we released a healthy wireless subwoofer underneath, which sported a plain black closet and no external controls aside from power and key combinations. As we ran through the eyes along the exterior, we noted a beveled structure throughout the upper part, which helps to break the monotony. Under the subwoofer, we found a fully nude loose speaker. Inside the box was a respectable collection of accessories. Next to Sony remote's signature (in all its glory plug) we discovered a complete manual, a pair of batteries, attached feet/wall mount brackets, and HDMI, and a digital optical cable. Features and design Although most CT770 aircraft can also be found at its relatively competitive price, many entrances have been a pleasant surprise. Offering three HDMI inputs, users can use the panel as an A/V surrogate receiver, and with its ARC connection (ARC explained here), you can easily boot into components connected to both an ARC-enabled TV, all connected via a single HDMI connection. This is a healing bonus and we have rarely (if ever) seen similar options offered at this price point. If we want to donate our glass half-empty hat, however, we must indicate that we have taken issue with the placement of the connection panel ? although we are not sure how Sony can fix the problem. Since the bar lies flat, the connecting bay is not a problem, as all cables are hidden imperceptibly from the place. You can even pair the device from the couch using the remote control or select a one-touch connection via the NFC access point at the top of the panel. Additional control is available through the Sony Songpal app or by using the primary touch keys at the top of the device. Underneath the shiny screen of the CT770 mesh speaker sits four packs of drivers, including dual 20mm tweeters and dual 60mm drivers. The system is powered by 110 W of digital amplification. The remaining 120Ws are reserved for the subwoofer, which uses power to push its 6-inch driver downwards, set in a closet with a bass reflex. Additional features for the system include both a 3D and a 4K pass with HDMI 2.0 support. Setting Up With the HDMI input bank and ARC connection, the ideal way to connect a soundbar to the TV is to enter the ARC HDMI of your TV (provided that it is available). This will allow the soundbar to respond to the main commands from the TV's remote control and link all components connected to the panel and TV using a single cable. If the TV does not have ARC HDMI, you can also connect the panel to the TV using a digital optical output. This method will still allow you to connect components to three inputs of the HDMI bar and run the video on the TV via HDMI, but any sound from the TV itself will need to be sent from the TV to the digital optical input panel. Finally, if you do not have an optical output, you can connect the TV with RCA outputs of your TV via CT770 3.5mm analog input. Performance CT770 is most noticeable and aspect of productivity is its tendency to detail and clarity. In this department, this little bar punches above its weight, offering a sharp and nimble touch to dialogue. He also does a great job digging details of all the little moments, be it a step on a difficult road, swipe the character's hand on the cloth or the surrounding change of sound when it is reflected on different surfaces. One of the main examples of the latest feature was demonstrated during one of our favorite audio testing films, Skyfall. The high end was occasionally abrasive when attacking sounds like a blade scraping into a marble countertop. However, the icy color never crossed the line inconveniently, and this allowed accuracy and presence throughout the sound field. The middle was thinner, although bursts of action from shots or roaring engines were still just to the touch brighter than we wanted. Again, small columns will always have their limitations. The CT770's skill to get into the room also helped him deliver more powerful moments where he did a good job while maintaining clarity. Conically, one of Skyfall's most difficult scenes is the explosion and subsequent train crash in the tube as Bond chases Silva. And while the scene was a bit chaotic, the CT770 did an excellent job of keeping balanced, knocking with great force down the low, while showing breathtaking details in each fallen piece of brick and mortar. As for the bass in general, it was perhaps our least favorite aspect. We'd like to customize the subwoofer to cover a little more than the lower middle, and while it had its moments of strength and tight musicality, the large closet offered a little too much tumultuous subtext at times. However, when the rumbling force was caused, the sub responded mainly to the positive effect. Finally, we really liked the width and breadth of the stereo image CT770. The panel does better than most we rated in our class when it comes to displaying virtual merges, outlining the placement of effects with precision, and creating a more encompassing experience than we expected. While it still feels stereo, it's a great stereo field and one we've enjoyed throughout our score. Music playback was also a welcome inclusion in the CT770 talents. The bar did an excellent job of outlining the brilliance and clarity in the middle and treble, revealing the intricacies of the bending of the guitar string, the resonance of the crash plate, and the deeper layers in the timbre of voices. Again wanted a little more accuracy from the subwoofer on some tracks, but we still enjoyed overall performance for most of our catalog. At $450, Sony's new HW-CT770 may be a little more expensive than competing entry-level sound bars, but you'll get a lot for your money. The bar brings balance, details and power to your home theater, and offers many features often reserved for systems in the upper class. Sony may not have won the consumer audio war as of now, but when it comes to the battle for the best entry-level soundbar, the CT770 is a dangerous contender.
