A holiday resort, exclusively, for children and teenagers was named top overall Small- Medium and Micro Enterprise in South Africa on 26 October 2006 at an Award ceremony at the Birchwood Executive Hotel in Johannesburg. This is the first time that only South African SMME’s were invited to participate in the South Africa SMME Awards.

Small Medium and Micro Enterprises from all over South Africa competed in the SMME Awards this year and it is significant that a children’s resort, the only one of its kind ultimately emerged as overall winner. According to Professor Nicholas Biekpe,, Professor at the University of Stellenbosch and President of Africagrowth Research, the emergence of Sugar Bay Resorts as winner is indicative of the importance SMMEs attach to efforts aimed at uplifting and equipping of the youth of our Country. He stressed that sustainable development in South Africa will depend on the skills of the youth.

Sugar Bay Resort is the only resort of its kind in South Africa. The company caters exclusively for children and their needs and also provides 24 hour professional supervision. All staff members are trained in First-Aid and CPR and 12 of them are qualified beach lifeguards.. There are also roaming supervisors at all times who check safety procedures and evaluate performance. Sugar Bay is a member of SATSA, KZN Tourism and the ACA.

Other winners at the award ceremony include:

• Service sector award: Sugar Bay Resort

• Trade sector award: Plantwise

• Industrial sector award: SED Printing Solutions

• Best new business sector award: SED Printing Solutions

• Most innovative sector award: Bottle Craft (SA)

• Young enterprise sector award: Anjo’s Flame Peri-Peri

• South Africa SMME of the year award: Sugar Bay Resorts

The SMME of the Year Award was sponsored by FNB Commercial Banking.

Professor Biekpe emphasized that the development of best practices in the SMME sector could vastly improve the sustainability of the small enterprises in South Africa. “ A small business does not require a million rand investment to be sustainable, what it requires is support from an understanding bank manager, a conducive investment environment, and an SMME manager with a determination as hard as steel“ says Professor Nicholas Biekpe.
