FOREWORD
This Glossary of Soviet Military and Related Abbreviations is a companion volume to TM 30-544, Glossary of Soviet Military Terminology. It contains, in addition to the most frequently encountered Soviet military abbreviations, selected abbreviations of political, administrative, industrial, and scientific terms likely to be encountered in military documents.
There appear to be no Soviet rules governing the formation of abbreviations. Generally, Soviet abbreviations are letters, syllables, combinations of syllables and letters or of syllables and words, or the first and last syllables of a word. Use of capital letters and periods is often optional, and the form shown in this glossary is the one believed to be encountered most frequently.
The same abbreviation may stand for a confusing number of totally different words; conversely, the same word may be represented by variant abbreviations. The meaning of an abbreviation, therefore, often can be determined only from the context. A number of abbreviations which have become accepted as independent words are included in the glossary, e.g.: cheka, narkom, kolkhoz, komsomol.
Terms marked "Obsol" refer to organizations, activities, or concepts which are no longer in existence or which now have different names. They are included because they may still be found in old books and documents.
For a table of symbols used in ballistics, refer to Appendix II, TM 30-544.
