NEW EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD - E111

As a result of recent changes to European law a new E111 form will be required from the first of January 2005. This will replace the old form which expired 31st December 2004.

Members of EU national health schemes travelling within the European Economic Area (EEA) currently benefit from the E111 system, which allows visitors to other member countries to use the public health care sector on the same terms as a local resident.

To avoid the confusion of trying to work out the public healthcare system of the country you are visiting in advance, especially if you are visiting more than one in a trip, it is more reassuring to have health insurance that also gives 'private treatment' options and repatriation cover in the countries to be visited.

It is also highly recommended to take travel insurance to cover loss of baggage, passport and any delays or liabilities that may occur.

Before travelling you should contact your local Department of Health to find out how the new European Health Insurance Card will affect you, what it covers and how to apply. UK residents can obtain the new E111 form and the booklet ‘Health Advice for Travellers’ from the Post Office. Forms are also available to download from the Department of Health’s website: .uk/travellers. Please note the section ‘Getting treatment in countries inside the EEA’.

SalzburgerLand, Austria

The province of Salzburg is a true winter wonderland for all visitors. Most come to experience SalzburgerLand’s glistening slopes, powdery fresh snow and warm rays of sunshine. With over 500 ski lifts, 200 kilometres of runs for every level of ability and extensive well groomed cross-country trails, Salzburg's mountains are ideal conditions for carvers, boarders and skiers.

There is plenty to do off the slopes too. A variety of health spa facilities beckon visitors to indulge in a sauna, go swimming or just let go of the stress while taking in the picturesque scenery. There are countless towns and villages rich in history and culture. Castles, museums and fortresses to explore. Did I mention the scenery? Soak in those magnificent natural landscapes while hiking through SalzburgerLand or for the very active there is ice & waterfall climbing, tobogganing or even Zorbing (rolling down a hill in a big inflated ball).

Because SalzburgerLand offers such an extensive variety of experiences it is especially hard to decide on a specific town/village or skiing region to recommend but here are just a few recommendations.

Salzburg City

INTRODUCTION

Synonymous with singing nuns and the Von Trapp Family, there is a little bit more to Salzburg then the Hollywood myth. Surrounded by mountains and located at the foot of the Sazach River valley, Salzburg is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

Alongside the sensitively renovated old city which owes its charm to a deeply rooted combination of architecture and landscape, a number of modern developments have brought Salzburg international recognition and created a chic, cosmopolitan and stylish city

Salzburg’s biggest claim to fame is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in the city in 1756. So it’s not surprising that Mozart's music serves as the heartbeat of Salzburg. But the city's culture doesn't stop there, and despite a conservative reputation it has become increasingly avant-garde, with museums showcasing modern art by Klimt and Kokoschka and shows by contemporary artists.

WHY STAY IN SALZBURG

Because the city is so small, you can wonder around easily and safely making it an ideal winter weekend destination. Staying in Salzburg is often cheaper then staying at one of the ski resorts throughout SalzburgerLand. It’s an ideal base for skiers or non skiers.

DOWNFALLS

Be prepared to travel at least an hour to get to good ski slopes in the south of SalzburgerLand.

Ski SalzburgerLand

The Alps cover most of Austria, so it's really no surprise that this country is one of Europe's top ski destinations. Unlike some other European countries, Austrian ski villages are chocolate-box traditional and pretty, centring around an onion-domed church rather than a coach park.

The Postalm, a family snow paradise, the Zwölferhorn for the advanced and skilled skier and Gosau, El Dorado of the skiing connoisseur is just a hop away. Comfortable Ski-Buses will take you to the snow paradise of your choice. Reasonably priced ski passes automatically open all gates to lifts, well-tended pistes and snow board-slopes.

Brucker Bundesstrasse 1a

A-5700 Zell am See

Zell am See is a beautiful lakeside town, located only an hour and a half from Salzburg, and it’s in the heart of the Europa Sport Region. There's plenty for everyone to do in Zell. From mountain walks to fabulous skiing, boat trips and train rides, Zell has lots on offer.

The mountain above Zell am See is the "Schmittenhöhe" - or "Sugar Loaf" mountain. A ride to the top on the gondola offers tremendous views down to Zell, across the lake and to Kaprun. From Kaprun (20 minutes away by bus), you can go up to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier (10,500ft), where you can ski all year round.

The railway station in Zell, literally on the lake side, offers connections with many Austrian towns and cities including Salzburg - just an hour and a half away

Bad Gastein has been known for its thermal baths since the 13th century and since 1949 for its curative tunnel. With the Ski World Championship in 1958 the world of tourism found its way into Bad Gastein. Today the ski resort is one of the most important in Europe.

The Gastein ski area, one of Austria's largest, is separated into four areas, served by four resorts and several small additional lift base areas. The largest of the ski areas begins on the Stubnerkogel Mountain above Bad Gastein and is more-or-less lift-linked, via the small Angertal Ski centre, to the skiing on the Schlossalm above Bad Hofgastein. The highest ski area is the small sector above Sport Gastein which has a base at 1600 metres and a snow-sure top lift at 2685 metres on the Kreuzkogel mountain. With the other villages of Bad Hofgastein and Dorf Gastein and the Sport Gastein area, the valley has 48 lifts and 201 kilometres of interesting terrain.

From Salzburg airport, a train to Bad Hofgastein (via Salzburg) costs £25 return; a taxi one-way costs £110-£145.
