Study Guide

KEY

1. Theme- the message the author wants you to know.

2. Plot- what happens in the story (first this, then this, etc)

3. Narrator- the person telling the story

4. 1st person point of view- the narrator is inside, or involved in the story.

5. 3rd person point of view- narrator is outside, or not involved in the story.

6. Point of View- the vantage point from which the story is told (who is telling the story)

7. Characters- the actors of the story.

8. Static Character- a minor character in a work of fiction who does not undergo change or growth. (ALSO KNOWN AS A FLAT CHARACTER)

9. Round Character- a major character in a work of fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it.

10. THEME-OMIT

11. Implied theme- the author does not tell you the theme directly. You have to figure it out by what the character learns and by what happens to the character.

12. Protagonist- the main character or the main ‘good’ guy in the story.

13. Antagonist- the main ‘bad’ guy in the story.

14. PLOT-OMIT

15. Setting- the time and place of the story.

16. Exposition- background information is given.

17. Rising action- developing the conflict

18. Climax-the highest point of action

19. Falling action- what happens after the climax

20. Resolution- the final outcome.

21. Conflict- the main problem or struggle in the story.

22. The three characteristics of a short story:

a. Very few characters

b. Only one or two settings

c. The action happens, rises, and falls very quickly.

24. Universal theme: A theme everyone can relate to no matter where or when it takes place.

25. The three most common universal themes are: rags to riches, love conquers all, and good vs. evil.
