Students also learn to appreciate the culture and history of Spanish-speaking countries to gain an insight into the lifestyles in these countries. This includes the foods, celebrations and other special characteristics of these countries. Students will recognize similarities and differences between their own culture and the culture of Spanish speaking countries in the Americas and Europe. Language instruction will enable students to respond to questions in simple, grammatically correct sentences of phrases, using the regular verbs learned in the present and future tense ( ir a ).Emphasis will be on developing practical skills such as giving personal information like names, addresses and telephone numbers and developing skills to facilitate travel in Spanish-speaking countries. Students will learn details of life in these countries such as differences in schedules, metric systems and school culture- to include vocabulary- and differences in culture which are expressed linguistically.The classroom teacher will use direct instruction and guided practice of items learned to lead to conversations. Students will also work in groups, use visual aids and are encouraged to use computer practice at home of skills acquired in class.Students should acquire a good foundation of Spanish and understand the countries and inhabitants of these countries better. Students will deepen their knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries, their histories and culture. They will also improve vocabulary, grammar competency, speaking, listening and writing skills. Furthermore, students will use this knowledge to create conversations and express themselves through different forms of writing.Students will practice new and previously learned vocabulary by speaking, listening and writing. This includes questions and answers, negative and positive commands as well as elaborations and clarifications. New grammatical items include the preterite, future tense of verbs, reflexive verbs, the subjunctive of regular and some irregular verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns and the use of prepositions. They will practice shopping, travel, landmark and directions vocabulary.Students will also learn to appreciate pastimes and sports which are popular in Spanish speaking countries and they will be introduced to special foods of these countries.By the end of the year students should be able to appreciate narratives written in Spanish and they should have the competence to create written narratives themselves.
