First Quarter Syllabus
Teacher: Carlos Humberto Holly Introductory Spanish 7
Text: Realidades A, Prentice Hall Content: Para Empezar and Capítulo 1A
The focus of Para Empezar is to involve the student in a total language experience of listening and speaking. There will be daily opportunities for students to practice dialogues with each other as well as to respond to CD activities. There will be written exercises to demonstrate awareness of subject matter. Evaluation of this unit will focus mainly on listening and reading comprehension. This unit will take approximately 6 weeks.
The following is an outline of the material to be covered weekly. There is always the possibility of an overlap due to school schedule, holidays, and the necessity of review. It is the student's responsibility to make changes in the time frame if necessary. Expect 1 or 2 quizzes a week.
Week 1: Pgs. 2-4 Student will introduce himself, greet someone, and get a brief introduction of Spain.
Students will learn how to pronounce the vowels and the consonants in Spanish.
Week 2: Pgs. 5-7 Students will learn the numbers 0-100, some commands, and become aware of formal vs.
informal speech in Spanish. Students will continue reviewing material from week 1. The Greetings
and Expressions at an Introduction quiz will be on August 18.
Weeks 3 & 4: Pgs. 9-13 Students will learn how to tell time in Spanish. Students will also learn vocabulary
pertaining to classroom objects and parts of body using definite and indefinite articles. Students will
spell out these words orally in Spanish. Students will begin learning the days of the week and months
of the year. The quiz on Alphabet, Numbers, Commands and Greetings will be on August 28.
Week 5: Pgs. 14-22 Students will continue using the days and months by forming dates in Spanish. Students
will learn weather expressions and be able to answer questions pertaining to weather and dates.
Students will continue reviewing the numbers 0-100. The quiz on Body, Numbers, Time and
Greetings will be on September 4 and a quiz on Days, Months, Dates and Objects will be on
September 15.
Week 6: Students will review this chapter and prepare for the first chapter test. Each chapter test will contain a
15-20 point essay. The quiz on Weather and Seasons will be on September 21 and Test 1 will be on
September 23.
Weeks 7- 9: Capítulo 1A Students will talk about activities they like and don't like to do, ask others what they
like to do, and understand cultural perspectives on favorite activities. Quiz 1 (Ch. 1A) will be given on October 2. The Chapter 1A test will be a cumulative Quarter Test, if time permits. It is scheduled on October 9.

Two points a day will be given for class participation. If a student fails to bring proper materials to class, points will be deducted. Lack of proper participation or improper conduct will also be causes for deduction of points and a possible after-school detention.
