Discipline and Management Plan for High School StudentsBarbara CarrollUniversity of Southern MississippiDiscipline and Management Plan for High School StudentsEstablishing three classroom rules at the beginning of each academic year will help me be a more effective Spanish teacher. Explaining and practicing these rules as many times at is necessary will be my focus during the first couple weeks of class. Besides these rules, I would also like to create a sense of community with my students. As Capizzi said, “Many behavioral problems can be avoided by establishing a solid classroom management plan at the beginning of the school year” (2009, p.1). So, at the beginning, it may seem they are not learning new material, but establishing the foundation of how we will learn together will make the academic year more productive for me and for my students. My students need to understand that I am rowing with them and not against them. I agreed with Bianco when he says that, “Kids are our clients. As in the business world, it pays to know the needs of your clients” (2014, p. 17). Showing a genuine interest in their personal lives will make them to feel part of a community in the classroom and that will facilitate team work. Sayeski states, “Teachers who had positive relationships with their students had 31% fewer discipline problems” (2014, p.122), establishing a good relationship at the beginning might take time from our academic plans, but in the long run it will pay off.Knowing which subjects they enjoy more will help me create interesting lessons plans for the classroom. This way, my students can apply immediately the knowledge that they get in the Spanish classroom into their other subjects. The purpose is to get rid of the idea that learning a foreign language may only be useful in the future. On the first day of class students will sign a contract and it will be posted on the wall with their signatures. I will propose the first three rules, and I will allow my students to suggest the other two rules. Being responsible, respectful, and courteous are the main rules I want to practice in every Spanish class. When I say responsible in the Spanish classroom I mean that my students show up every day with their pencils, dictionaries, textbooks and notebooks. It also means that my students will turn in their homework on time. When I say respectful in my Spanish classroom it means that while I am lecturing, my students need to be listening, and they can speak after I call their names. Therefore, during the lecturing time only one person can talk at the time while the rest needs to be listening. At the beginning of the lecturing time, I will remind them that it is time for everybody to practice listening skills which will help them to succeed not only in Spanish classroom, but in the rest of their classes and in many other personal and professional relationships. Being respectful in the Spanish classroom it also means to show interest in the subject and follow instructions in each section. When I say courteous I mean treat everybody the same way you would like to be treated. Be patient with your classmates, allow your classmates to work without interruptions. Once you finish your assignment look and see if somebody needs your help. Once one of the above rules is broken for the second time, they will receive immediately consequences. In order to be consistent there will not be third chances. I like to apply the second chance because we are all human and in the real world we all make mistakes, and the majority of the time we get second chances. I will limit my lecturing time as much as I can that way we can apply the rule one hundred percent. In the rest of the activities, I expect my students doing their best while they are working and follow my instructions. Acknowledging good behavior in each class will be my goal. As Capizzi states, “Teachers should praise appropriate behavior and provide logical negative consequences for inappropriate behavior” (2014, p.10), so every day will be a new opportunity for each student, I will forget all their past misbehavior. This will give the students the opportunity to succeed in every section. Using positive and specific comments about students will form part of my vocabulary in the classroom that way they will see that I care for them. Working with the students’ parents is another strategy that I am planning to implement the next academic year. I am planning to give a good behavior card to my students who follow the rules at the end of each month, and I will ask their parents to reward them. So, parents will not only receive referrals from the Spanish class, but also good behavior notes. The consequences for negative misbehavior are going to be the same ones that the other teachers apply in the school. Introducing different activities into my lesson plans will be another strategy to help me prevent misbehavior. Planning extra activities is going to be another section of my lesson plans. That way if one activity does not work, I will be ready to change activities at all times. During the activities, I will focus more in what students can do instead of what students are not allow to do. When students lose focus, I will encourage them to get back on track first than giving them a warning of misbehavior. Being consistent in the application of these three rules (responsible, respect and courteous) will be the key to a successful learning experience in the Spanish classroom. ReferencesBianco, A.
