Glossary of English-Spanish financial terms
Glossary of English-Spanish Financial Terms: Introduction
Listening and responding to consumers is central to the Bureau's work to educate and empower consumers to make better informed financial decisions. Consumers nationwide have engaged with the Bureau through public field hearings, listening sessions, roundtables, town halls, the Bureau's website, , and the Bureau's Office of Consumer Response. The Bureau has also sought input from a range of stakeholders, including financial educators, community-based organizations, financial institutions, and others about challenges that consumers face, effective approaches to overcoming those challenges, and what the Bureau can do to improve the financial decision-making process of consumers.
This engagement, which informs the work of the Bureau, would be incomplete without efforts to include the more than 25 million people1 in the US who have limited ability to speak, write, or read in English (that is, limited English proficient or LEP persons).2 Spanish is the most common non-English language spoken at home in the U.S.3
The Bureau created a glossary translating common financial terms into Spanish in October 2015 and has updated it in 2018 with additional terms. Terms for the updated glossary have been compiled from other entities, including the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Internal Revenue Service, Department of Justice, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Trade Commission, Social Security Administration,

Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, General Services Administration, and National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. The Bureau also translated many of the terms itself.
Use of the glossary of terms is not mandated, nor is it guidance or a requirement for any stakeholder. The Bureau uses the glossary to ensure consistency as it translates consumer education materials from English to Spanish. The Bureau publicly shares it as a resource that may help other people and organizations that provide financial information to those who have more language proficiency in Spanish than in English.
The Bureau offers a number of other resources for limited English proficient consumers and those who work with them:
Publications in multiple languages are available at .
The Bureau's Spanish language website is accessible online at es/.
Limited English proficient persons can submit complaints to the Bureau in more than 180 languages via telephone at 855-411-2372.
The Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection is a U.S. government agency whose mission is to regulate the offering and provision of consumer financial products or services under the Federal consumer financial laws and to educate and empower consumers to make better informed financial decisions.
