Awards $13,000 in Scholarships

Montgomery, AL., April 30, 2008 – The School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) announces the selection of nine high school graduating seniors intending to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Education who will receive $9,000 in scholarships for 2008. SSA is also proud to announce the selection of four school administrators to receive $4,000 in scholarships for 2008 to pursue degrees in school administration.

The nine high school seniors selected to receive $1,000 scholarships include Deborah Snowden from Mary G. Montgomery High School, Mobile County School System; Andrea Clanahan from Southern Choctaw High School, Choctaw County School System; Matthew Daniels from Rehobeth High School, Houston County School System; Deirdre Bellamy from Beauregard High School, Lee County School System; Shelly Franklin from Leeds High School, Leeds City School System; Lindsey Haney from Talladega High School, Talladega City School System; Samantha Upton from Hillcrest High School, Tuscaloosa County School System; Anslee Burns from Muscle Shoals High School, Muscle Shoals City School System; and Melissa Price from Oneonta High School, Oneonta City School System.

The four administrators selected to receive $1,000 scholarships include Christie W. Armstrong, an Assistant Principal at Prattville High School in the Autauga County School System; Ronald W. Dodson, a Director of Secondary Education in Hoover City’s School System; Allison M. Mays, an Assistant Principal at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa County’s School System; and Demica G. Sanders, a Special Education Program Specialist in the Birmingham City School System.

All of SSA’s nine student scholarship recipients have plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Education. Deborah Snowden holds a 4.2 grade point average and plans to attend the

University of Mobile; Andrea Clanahan holds a 4.0 grade point average and plans to attend the University of West Alabama; Matthew Daniels holds a 4.2 grade point average and plans to

attend the University of North Alabama; Deirdre Bellamy holds a 4.4 grade point average and plans to attend the University of Alabama; Shelly Franklin holds a 4.0 and plans to attend the University of Montevallo; Lindsey Haney holds a 4.0 grade point average and plans to attend Auburn University; Anslee Burns holds a 4.2 grade point average and plans to attend Indiana University; Samantha Upton holds a 3.9 grade point average and plans to attend the University of Alabama; and Melissa Price holds a 4.0 grade point average and plans to attend the University of Alabama.

SSA’s four administrator scholarship recipients are all pursuing higher degrees in school administration. These practicing administrators will be seeking their higher degrees at the M.S./M.A., AA/Ed.S., or Ed.D/Ph.D. levels. Mrs. Armstrong plans to further her career in education by pursing a graduate degree in Educational Administration from Auburn University in Montgomery; Mr. Dodson is currently in his third year of work on a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at the University of Alabama in Birmingham; Mrs. Mays plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Administration from the University of Alabama; and Mrs. Sanders plans to pursue an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

“SSA is proud to be able to offer $13,000 in scholarships to students and administrators in Alabama. Effective leadership is essential to strong public schools and the success of Alabama’s children…that is what SSA is all about,” stated Dr. Susan Lockwood, SSA Executive Director.

SSA’s scholarship applications are scored by SSA’s Awards and Scholarships Committee which is chaired by Dr. Jodi Newton, Homewood City School Superintendent. Student Scholarship recipients will be formally presented with their scholarship checks by their respective School Superintendents during their high school’s senior awards program. Administrative Scholarship recipients will be formally presented with their scholarship checks by SSA Executive Director Dr. Susan Lockwood during the Conference of the Council for Leaders in Alabama (CLAS) Awards Luncheon in June at the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham.
