Job description

Post: Learning Support Assistant

Responsible to: HLTAs

Duties

Hours of work are 8.45am to 12.15pm.

The role of Learning Support Assistant is detailed below and describes in general terms the normal duties which the post-holder will be expected to undertake. However, the job or duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with the post.

1) Teaching and learning

a) Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the direction and guidance of the head teacher, SENCO, class teachers and lead HLTA.

b) Assist in the implementation of support plans for students and help monitor their progress.

c) Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.

d) Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists and occupational therapists, as necessary.

e) Assist class teachers with maintaining student records.

f) Support students with emotional or behavioural problems and help develop their social skills.

g) If assigned to work with a child with a statement of educational needs/EHCP; to provide information for review reports and to attend annual reviews if necessary.

2) Administrative duties

a) Prepare and present displays of students' work as required.

b) Support class teachers in photocopying and other tasks in order to support teaching.

c) Undertake other duties from time to time as the head teacher requires.

3) Standards and quality assurance

a) Support the aims and ethos of the school.

b) Set a good example, especially in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.

c) Attend training, team and staff meetings as required. Some of these may fall outside the 38 week term but suitable remuneration will be made.

d) Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned by the head teacher, for example supervisory roles in and out of the classroom.

e) Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety and safeguarding.

Skills and experience required

Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

1) Job specific experience

a. Ability to work with individuals and/or small groups with special educational needs as directed by HTLA, SENCO, class teacher or head teacher.

b. Experience of or ability to work with a pupil on a one-to-one basis.

c. Experience of delivering relevant interventions and/or educational and pastoral support programmes.

d. Experience of monitoring and assessing children’s progress, supported by SENCO or class teacher.

e. Experience of or willingness to organise educational games, club and extra-curricular activities.

2) Qualifications

a. GCSE Maths and English or equivalent is essential.

b. NVQ/SVQ or other vocational qualification in a discipline related to education or childcare is desirable.

c. Qualification in First Aid.

d. Knowledge of IT systems used by school and confidence in using them.

e. Willingness to undertake further vocational training is desirable.

3) Personal skills and experience

a. Acting professionally at all times is expected.

b. Awareness of legislation and policy concerning discrimination, diversity and inclusion.

c. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with pupils and colleagues, orally and in writing.

d. Ability to respond positively to change and willingness to be flexible in the work place.
