The Mysterious Ms. Martin – Making Predictions

Seatwork- Wednesday

Following the plot of a story requires readers to use clues in the story and what they know to make predictions.

Read the following story and then answer the questions on the following page.

It was a new school year and my first day in fourth grade. This meant going to the upper division and a new part of the building. My older brother, Brian, was in seventh grade and he had all the experiences I was about to have.

I got my teacher assignment in August. It was Mr. O’Hara, the same teacher Brian had. For the rest of the summer Brian tried to scare me about my new teacher. He would say things such as, “You are in for a long year. Mr. O’Hara doesn’t like kids. I once got into trouble for dropping a book! You are not allowed to make mistakes. He even does hand inspections to make sure you have clean hands!” I chuckled at Brian’s stories while secretly concerned he was telling the truth.

I was so nervous on the first day of school. I couldn’t find my lunch. I looked in the refrigerator in the place I left it the night before, but I couldn’t find it. I ended up missing the bus. I was so upset. My mom had to drive me to school. On the way she got a text from Brian. It read that he took my lunch. I began to cry. My mom wanted to know what was wrong. I told her about all of the stories that Brian was telling me. Now I was going to be in trouble on my first day.

My mom told me to relax. She told me to ignore Brian and that it would be okay. I still was worried when I got into school. I ran down the hallway not even knowing what classroom I had to find. A door suddenly opened and I heard a teacher call out, “Stop”. The teacher looked at me and asked, “Why are you running?”

I replied, “I am late for Mr. O’Hara’s class. It is the first day and I’m already in trouble.”

The teacher chuckled and said, “Oh you must be Timmy. I was worried you missed your first day. Welcome aboard. I’m glad you could be here. Why don’t you get yourself a drink of water, get unpacked and come on in. I’ll see you in a few minutes.”

The Mysterious Ms. Martin – Making Predictions

Homework - Wednesday

Following the plot of a story requires readers to use clues in the story and what they know to make predictions.

Read the following story and then answer the questions on the following page

Long ago in Ireland, Sean loved to draw. He knew that one day he must follow in his father’s footsteps. He must become a blacksmith, as was the custom in his village. But Sean loved to draw.

When Sean was eleven, his mother died. The next year, his father died, so Sean had to take over his father’s work. But he missed drawing so much he decided to study art in his spare time. He needed to find a teacher.

Sean sought a very famous artist who turned him down. The artist turned down everyone as he only wanted to be an artist not a teacher. Sean was heartbroken and was headed back to his shop when he saw a man sketching under a tree. The man was a quiet artist who loved nature and he would sketch what he saw and then make detailed carvings of his images. Sean asked the artist if he would teach him the finer points of art. This artist agreed. Sean loved to make drawings but also learned to love to make the carvings as much as his teacher did. Sean’s work was so beautiful that he helped to make this art very popular.

Sean created many images that were from his village. He began to grow tired of seeing the same things and his work suffered. His work was not as popular anymore. One day Sean left on a long journey throughout the country. He sketched so many images that inspired him. He made these images in to many detailed carvings. He made carvings of mountains, oceans, lakes, animals, and of much more. Many people came back to his studio and admired his collection. Some were artists from America. They were so impressed that he decided to go back home and create similar artworks.

The Mysterious Ms. Martin – Understanding Dialogue

Seatwork- Thursday ___/ 8

An author will often use dialogue, or what a character says, to help readers learn more about the characters.

Dialogue is all about nuance. After all, there are almost limitless ways to say any particular thing you want to say, but each one carries its own flavor. Showing character through dialogue is all about being sensitive to the nuances of these different flavors, and picking the one that best matches the traits of the character saying the line.

Look at the following examples:

“Would you mind fixing me a ham sandwich?” This shows a more polite character

“Fix me a ham sandwich.” This shows a more demanding character.

Read each quote below and infer what qualities each quote might have.

“Can I help you?” vs. “What do you want?”
