WS Calorimetry

WS Heat Calculations #3 Name ___________________________

Period _____

1. How much heat energy is required to raise the temperature of 200g of water from 25⁰C

to 100⁰C?

2.a) Calculate the specific heat capacity of glass from the following data. The temperature

of a piece of glass with a mass of 65g increases by 26⁰C when it absorbs 840 J of heat

energy.

b) The temperature of a 150 g drinking glass decreased from 25⁰C to12⁰C as 125 g of water

is added. What was the original temperature of the water? (This is a challenge!)

3. The specific heat capacity of aluminum is 0.900J/g˚C.

a) Calculate the energy needed to raise the temperature of a 858g block of

aluminum from 22.8˚C to 94.6˚C.

b) Calculate the molar heat capacity of aluminum.

4. It takes 78.2J to raise the temperature of 45.6g lead by 13.3˚C. Calculate the specific

heat capacity and molar heat capacity of lead.

5. A coffee-cup calorimeter initially contains 125g water at 24.2˚C. 10.5g of potassium

bromide, also at 24.2˚C, is added to the water. After the potassium bromide dissolves,

the final temperature is 21.1˚C. Calculate the enthalpy change for this process in units

of J/g. Assume that the specific heat capacity of the solution is 4.18 J/g˚C and that no

heat is transferred to the surroundings or to the calorimeter.
