Background

Mr. A. (47 years) referred for speech therapy due to his communication difficulties. He had a left side CVA. He was treated at the stroke unit for two weeks and he continued speech therapy as an out patient for 3 visits. His recording was done one (01) month after the stroke. He participated in sessions with his brother. He uses Sinhala and could read and write well before the stroke.

Social History

Mr. A. is married and has two teenage children who are at school. Wife is not employed and Mr. A. used to work as a shop assistant. Currently Mr. A’s brother helps them financially and takes him to the hospital regularly. According to his brother Mr. A was a social and active person before the stroke. He likes gardening and watching television during his leisure time. Brother had noticed that after the stroke he gets angry and frustrated easily.

Client profile B – Case Two

Background

Mr. B. is 39 years old and he was working in Iraq when he suffered a Myocardial Infarction on 20.02.2011. He was sent to Sri Lanka two weeks later and he was admitted to the cardiology unit at the National Hospital. 3 weeks after the MI (10.03.2011) he developed a right-sided weakness with loss of speech. The neurologists confirmed a stroke and treated him for 3 weeks at the hospital. He was referred for speech therapy on the second day after the stroke but could not continue participating in sessions at that time as he got tired very easily due to his heart condition. He has attended 7 sessions of speech therapy in the last three months, and this recording was done on 13.6.2011.

According to Mr. B.’s wife he was fluent in both Sinhala (L1) and English (L2) and had good literacy skills in both languages.

Social History

Mr. B. owned a tailor shop and had been a tailor. However due to financial issues he had worked in Iraq as a driver for the last three (03) years. He is married with two younger children (ages 3 years and 6 years) and wife is unemployed. Currently they are staying with his wife’s parents.

According to his wife, Mr. B. has friends but did not converse a lot with them even before the stroke. He likes reading and singing. He also played guitar for a music group when he was in Iraq.
