Informative Speech (100 points)

Summer 2020

Outline: A typed, complete sentence outline must be submitted prior to the presentation and all outlines must follow the outline example. Outlines must be submitted through Canvas as a Word document or a PDF (not Google Docs) no later than 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 11th. (Outline: 50 points)

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to research, prepare, and present a speech to inform an audience. In choosing a topic, speakers should consider topics where the audience will gain some benefit. The speech should be 5 to 8 minutes long.

Research: At least four (4) sources are required for this speech. Any credible sources may be used, including those from either printed or electronic formats. Newspapers, magazines, journals, books, and respectable websites are encouraged for supportive information. Interviews, pamphlets, personal experiences, and other such information do not count toward the research requirement of the speech. Source citations are required throughout the outline and a works cited list must be included as the final page of the outline assignment. All citations must follow MLA format.

Topics: All topics must be approved by the instructor. Remember, this is a "speech to teach." Any persuasive or entertainment elements should be subordinate to the informative intent (i.e., they should be there to make the teaching more effective).

Speech Requirements: The speech will be graded on the following criteria (100 points):

1. An opening device that stimulates attention and focuses on the topic.

2. A clear purpose statement and preview of main points. This is an informative speech; do not attempt to persuade us as a central purpose of the speech.

3. Appeals in the introduction to build your credibility and to establish that the topic is worthwhile to the audience.

4. A body of the speech which presents from two to five clear main points (any more requires a good reason and special reinforcement).

5. At least four (4) oral footnotes during the speech presentation.

6. Proper organization of main points, sub-points, and supporting materials.

7. Recognizable and appropriate internal summaries and transitional statements.

8. A summary of the main points of the speech, and a strategy for reinforcing audience interest in the conclusion (a "strong finish").

9. A closing device that provides a "note of finality" for the speech.

10. Effective delivery, including: 90% eye contact with the audience, purposeful movement within the speech, appropriate gestures, controlled posture, articulation, vocal variety, and without reading the entire speech.

11. Appropriate use of at least one visual (or sensory) aid.
