Before you start...

? Read Chapter 2 of Ruby McCracken: Tragic without Magic ? Find the snack spell, and see if you can use it to conjure up something delicious!

How Spells Work

The spells that Ruby and her family use are all made of rhyming couplets. A rhyming couplet is two lines of the same length, which end in words that sound similar:

Eye of newt and hoof of yak, Let's conjure up a tasty snack.

How to Write a Spell

? Start by deciding what you want your spell to do: is it a nice spell, or a nasty spell? Does it make something appear or disappear? Use your imagination and remember, magic can make anything happen!

? Next, start to think about rhyming words that you could use in your spell. Write down your ideas so you don't forget them.

? Finally, put your rhyming words into sentences to create your spell!

Before you start...

? Read Chapter 3 of Ruby McCracken: Tragic Without Magic ? Witches and wizards often have a familiar -- an animal companion who helps them

with their magic. Make a list of all the witches and wizards you can think of who have a familiar.

Excercise

Ruby's familiar -- a cat called Vronsky -- reacts very strangely when he moves to the Ordinary World. He turns into a dog, but still acts like a cat! Use this idea to write a story about an animal who changes shape into something else. What difficulties might they have in their new shape? Is there anything they might be better at in their new shape? Use the space below to jot down ideas and plan your story.

How to use:

? Print out as many copies of the bunting shapes as you need. (Print on A3 paper for bigger bunting!)

? Carefully cut out each shape, and fold in half to make triangles. ? Fold each bunting shape over a piece of string and use glue to secure. ? Hang up in your classroom or library for some Ruby Mc-Cracking decorations!
