Words Their Way: Weekly Spelling Homework

Monday

Individual sort: sort the spelling words under the header words (on index cards). Record the finished sort onto the first blank sort chart provided.

Tuesday

Buddy sort: have someone read your spelling words out loud to you. You then spell the word for them and tell them which category each word fits into. Please have a parent or other adult initial here after you have completed a buddy sort: __________

AND

Definitions: look up each word online or in the dictionary and define it in your own words so that you have time to study their meanings. The three words that you will be asked to use in sentences on your test will be three of the more difficult vocabulary words.

Wednesday

Word Hunt: use your independent reading book to find words that fit into your sort (but are not already on your list). Record the words you find onto the second blank sort chart.

Example: if you are doing a sort with prefixes, you may find the word “dismiss” in your independent reading book to add to the list of dis- words.

Remember to turn in your High Frequency Word packet to Mrs. Gestrich tomorrow.

Thursday

Finish your Words Their Way packet and study for tomorrow’s spelling test.
