Introduction

Welcome to our series of spelling workbooks for grades 1-5; this workbook covers grade 3 spelling.

The purpose of these workbooks is to help students learn essential spelling skills. Each workbook contains a number of lessons. Each lesson introduces a set of spelling words presented in different exercises. A full answer key is provided at the end of each lesson.

Why study spelling?

We have spell-checkers on our computers, so why is it important that our children learn to spell? Is it important our kids learn the spelling rules we learned at school?

Studying spelling builds language skills Research has shown that learning to spell builds language skills that are used in both reading and writing. All rely on the visual representation of words and the relationships between letters, sounds and meanings.

Spelling is a building block skill, and the correlation between spelling skills, reading skills and writing skills has been clearly established.

Good spelling is important When people read something someone has written and that text has spelling errors, it does not leave a good impression. It is expected that adults can spell properly. University applications and job resumes with spelling errors don't make it very far.

Computers are not always there to catch our spelling mistakes. We still do lots of written communications away from devices.

Good spelling is a fundamental skill that every student should develop.
