Editor in chief Graphic Designer Web Geek

Writing a book in a day

(or: things that go bump in the night)

Today we will create a book describing potential hazards you may be exposed to as you explore your natural surroundings. Students will be assigned a potential hazard (e.g., copperhead, black bear, rabies) and will create a ½ page summary of the hazard and the appropriate precautions and level of concern. An example summary for black widows is presented on the reverse side of this document. You should use at least 3 different web pages from which to assemble your information, locate and provide an image, collect the URL for use as a citation, and rephrase and restructure the information into a form you deem most appropriate. When you have the information in a draft form, you will have another student edit your work. When you are both happy with the contents, save the ½ page along with the citations as XXhazard_perY where XX are your initials and y is your class period (e.g., Mwblackbear_per8) on the G directory. Three students will not be given a hazard, but will perform important functions in the assembly of our book. Their roles will be described below.

Graphic Artist: The graphic artist is responsible for producing cover art, deciding page layout, choosing font size and style, and making other artistic decisions as the project unfolds.

Editor-in-chief: This person’s responsibility is to open the raw hazard files from different students and collate them into a single document after checking each page for errors of spelling and grammar.

Web Geek: This person will circulate through the lab helping other students search for information, save their files correctly, and other supervisory tasks as needed.

Project flow:

Introduction 10 min.

Information collection and formatting 40 min.

Collation of initial rough draft 20 min.

(listen for additional instruction during this phase)

Distribution of print copy to all students for editorial comments 20 min.

Group creation of a marked-up copy 10 min.

Fixing editorial comments 10 min.

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES BEFORE WE START
