Concussion Management: Getting Back in the Game

Recovering from a concussion is different for every athlete. For some it may take days, while for others it may take weeks. It is critical an athlete receives proper and immediate treatment and management to ensure they return to play as soon as possible.

Northwest Healthcare's Sports Medicine Program offers concussion management using ImPACT, a specialized computer program that evaluates neuro-cognitive function. It is used by professional sports teams as well as thousands of high schools, universities and organizations.

For athletes who experience a concussion or suspected concussion during Friday night or weekend games, expedited concussion management appointments are available the following Monday at Northwest Allied Sports Medicine, 1871 W. Orange Grove Road, Suite 135 with Dr. Troy Taduran or the Northwest Allied Physicians clinic at 10370 N. La Canada Dr., Suite 150 with Dr. Michael Lokale or Dr. Michael Yim. If a Monday appointment is not necessary, concussion management appointments are available with these providers.

Concussion Management

What is ImPACT?

ImPACT is a computerized program that evaluates and documents multiple aspects of neuro-cognitive functioning to help us evaluate an athlete's recovery following concussion. The 20-minute neuro-cognitive assessment tests verbal and visual memory, attention span, brain processing speed, reaction time and postconcussive symptoms.

Several local high schools use ImPACT which means their athletes are given a baseline test in the preseason. If a concussion is suspected during the season, a follow-up test is administered to see if the results have changed from the baseline. This comparison helps to diagnose and manage the concussion. Follow-up tests can be administered over days or weeks so to continuously track the athlete's recovery from the injury.

When baseline data is unavailable, ImPACT has a normative database of thousands of non-injured athletes which can be used for effective evaluations and comparisons.

Why use ImPACT?

ImPACT can help answer difficult questions about an athlete's readiness to return to play, protecting them from the potentially serious consequences of returning too soon. While traditional neurological and radiological procedures such as CT and MRI are helpful in identifying serious brain injuries (e.g., skull fractures and hematomas), they are ineffective at identifying the functional effects of concussion.

Consequently, clinicians must often rely on subjective observations or patient self-reports to diagnose and track a concussion. This is where ImPACT can help.

Conducting baseline and post-injury neuro-cognitive testing using ImPACT helps to objectively evaluate an athlete's cognitive status to determine if he or she is ready to get back into the game.

FACT:

? About 10% of all student athletes in contact sports suffer a concussion during the season.

? Recovery may take days or weeks, with individuals often experiencing dizziness, headaches, double vision, memory problems, irritability and depression.

? Premature return to play following a concussion can lead to potentially serious consequences.

Northwest Healthcare concussion management can provide:

? Post-injury ImPACT testing (by appointment)

? Neuro-cognitive assessment reports, comparison to norms, and follow-up testing

? Balance, coordination and reaction-time assessment

? Symptom severity assessment

? Return-to-play activity progression plan

? Printed summary of data for reference

? Medical referral information

? Educational resources
