Method: Predicting Meaning of Vocabulary

Material : Sports Illustrated For Kids ( March 2009) dictionary, picture cue cards, scenario cards

Based on the student inventory the following goal will be the target of this tutoring session: To develop more effective word attack strategies, esp. in the use of context.

Goal: Reading Applications : Informational, Technical, and Persuasive Text

1. Identify and understand organizational patterns of techniques including repetition of ideas, syntax and word choice, that authors use to accomplish their purpose and reach their intended audience.

Mini-lesson: (As many steps as needed to accomplish the goal)

Mini lesson on readers’ purpose.

• Explain that as readers we have purposes for reading.

• Show picture cue cards for purposes of reading entertainment, to be informed, or instructions (how to)

• Student will read scenarios, then decide which purpose fits.

• Tutor will confirm accuracy and provide clarifications if needed.

• Student will explain 3 purposes in own words.

Activity:

1. Student to read short article on Evan Longoria ( baseball player) from Sports Illustrated for Kids. ( ½ aloud, ½ silently)

2. Review purpose of author

3. Have student choose 5 words from article new to him, put in ABC order

4. Look up definitions for next session.

Writing or Spelling Activity: See # 3 in activity.

Assessment: How will you know the goal was met?

Student will demonstrate understanding by needing minimal assistance with mini-lesson activity, and applying skill to article read. Because my main goal is to apply vocabulary/ vocabulary skills acquisition, I will assess his application of vocabulary in later session.

Personal Reflection: The session went well. Applying the skills from mini-lesson tied in nicely with article. Tutee said he felt good about what he read, it was easy to read and he enjoyed it because it was sports oriented.
