Spring Newsletter 2009

President’s Message

By: Whitney Montgomery

I hope each of you have had a wonderful spring semester so far! I was pleased to see that everyone returned safely from spring break. Good luck with all of your remaining projects and exams. I would also like to extend special congratulations to all the graduating seniors! You will be missed, but we wish you the best of luck with your future careers.

The largest event of the semester was the 2009 IIE Student Conference hosted by Louisiana State University on February 12-14. The conference featured a plant tour, career fair, teambuilding activities, and workshops. Students were able to hear leaders speak of personal experiences. Also, advice and encouragement was given based upon possible careers and further developments in the field of industrial engineering. Overall, this was a very rewarding trip and a pleasure for everyone involved.

One of our fellow students, Caitlin Stone had the opportunity of working at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, during the summer and fall of 2008. On March 11, Caitlin spoke at our IE meeting of her experiences from the internship. If anyone is interested in more information concerning internships or job opportunities at Disney, Caitlin has contact information available.

After the meeting, we held officer elections for the 2009-2010 Academic Year. As current president, I would like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve again. I am also excited to serve with a great new set of officers during this year. Katie Frederick was elected Vice-President, Lauren Carter was elected Treasurer, Caitlin Stone was elected Secretary, and Sharniquica Stiles was appointed Director. This is an excellent staff who will accomplish great things for our chapter in the coming year. Also, be sure to congratulate Dr. Paul Ray for receiving the 2009 Faculty Advisor of the Year Award. The final IIE meeting will be held on April 1 as a joint meeting with the Central Alabama Professional IIE Chapter. Hope to see all of you at this meeting.

Congratulations to all of you and your well-deserved accomplishments throughout the year. Hanna Tani who graduated in December and is now attending graduate school in Japan received the IIE Outstanding Senior Award from the Birmingham Chapter of IIE. Congratulations to Ben Baxter and Brett Gunter for receiving the Wyllys G. Stanton Professional Leadership Award and Lauren Carter and Katie Frederick for winning the H. Paul Hassell Jr. Memorial Award. Also, Stephanie Berryman was nominated for the Student of the Year from the Engineering Council in Birmingham.

On a final note, again, congratulations to all the graduating seniors! Good luck with your future career paths and I wish you great success. For the juniors, keep up the hard work. Graduation will be here before you know it. Have a fun and safe summer!

Letter From the Faculty Advisor

By: Dr. Gary Moynihan

Best wishes to all of you for this Spring semester. IIE activities, this semester, began with our January 13th meeting. Trey Hayes, recent UA IE graduate and now a distribution engineer for Alabama Power Company, spoke regarding his experience making the personal and professional transition from college to the working world.

February brought the IIE Region 3 Student Conference. This year, it was hosted by Louisiana State University on February 12 through 14 in Baton Rouge (see logo below). We had nine members of our chapter attending. The LSU IIE chapter did a fine job in organizing their student conference. Their conference committee organized a wide range of speakers, plant tours, workshops, seminars, and career fair. They even organized a crawfish boil and barbeque as a farewell lunch.

On March 11, Caitlin Stone discussed her recent internship at Disney World in Orlando, FL. We also conducted elections for 2009-10 IIE chapter officers. This year’s chapter leadership has done a fine job. I wish to thank them for their efforts on behalf of our student chapter, and look forward to working with next year’s chapter officers.

At the time of this writing, the last IIE chapter meeting, for this academic year, is rapidly approaching. On April 1st, we will have a joint meeting with the Central Alabama senior IIE chapter. The speaker will be Mr. Jon Bowers, Industrial Engineering Supervisor for Inteva Products, LLC. See you then.
