TIPS TO HELP SUSTAIN YOUR 5’S PROGRAM

• Have regular time set a side each day for 5’s clean up.

• At the end of each week allow a few extra minutes to 5’s and do some dept. lean audits each week at this time.

• Set an early high standard for your 5’s program, so if you are short time or slip for a week you still maintain an organized plant.

• Have a short regular plant meeting to talk about 5’s. Departments or areas doing a nice job and things we need to work on or the next step in the process.

• Take pictures and document your goals and expectations for each department and make sure team members understand the goal.

• Look for articles and photos in your trade journal magazines you may get. (You are not the only manufacturing plant in your industry doing these things. You may find some great ideas to clip and share with your team so they better understand the importance of lean)

• Wtn. Box uses some flip charts we made from the lean 101 work book for quick easy reference with meetings or when we have a topic of concern.

• Do a good spring and fall clean up in your plant. Like home and in our business our flow changes in the winter as we need to have a few more things inside with the snow and ice. (Pallets, snow blower, shovels, loading and unloading trucks with doors open, ice melt.) Like home a good spring and fall cleaning is always needed.

• Our board moister changes in the winter also which will often affect some of the processes and quality in the plant.

• Take advantage of slow seasons or times in your plant to make positive changes in your lean program, so when you do become busy again you are better organized to be more productive.

• As a supervisor anything that you can schedule always will have an improved chance of being completed and completed on time. For lean and 5’s to work you need to allow some time for it. In the long run you should see this time returned in the form of reduction in the lean great eight lean waste areas.
