Dear Fairfield Families,

Spring is finally here! Teachers and students are excited to get a break from inside recess to enjoy the fresh air of outdoors on a more consistent basis. As we all take more time to go outside, please remind your child(ren) of ways to be safe when playing outdoors or spending time around ponds, creeks and rivers, etc.

As always FES continues to be busy before and after school. The third through fifth grade teachers are balancing the instruction to review for multiple choice SOL questions, and the many hands-on experiences. Our kindergarten through second graders are involved in many projects too.

On April 17th at 6:00pm FES will host "The Night of Nonfiction". This evening will start with a play by Bright Star Production titled "Jack's Adventure in Space". Afterwards the 5th grade will showcase their inventions to families, and 2nd grade will have their habitats on display. During this time students can earn a free book of their choice by attending 4 of the exhibits. The PTO will serve refreshments that highlight our nonfiction theme. This should be a fun evening and wonderful opportunity for our 5th graders to teach us all something new. I hope your family will attend. If something changes, I will send it out in a flyer.

Happy April and all the best in the days ahead.

Be Courageous. Be Kind.

With Wildcat Pride,

Mrs. Secord

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope this letter finds you well. I can't believe we have less than two months of school left. As you know, SOL testing season is right around the corner! This can be a stressful situation for both teachers and students. Fortunately, there are several ways you can help your child (and perhaps you!) feel less nervous about the tests. I've listed several tips below. If, after reading these strategies, you feel like your son/daughter still feels a lot of anxiety about the tests, I recommend reading Tyler Tames the Testing Tiger. It's a great story about a child who feels very nervous when it comes to taking a test, and learns helpful skills that "tame" his testing anxiety. He can also apply the strategies to other situations as well.

scores they get. One idea is to reward them for studying/ reviewing for the test. This way, you can be more confident your child is studying and doing their best, regardless of the score. You could even reward them if they improve on the next test.

*On test days, provide a calm environment each morning for your child.

*Get up a little earlier so she/he can avoid a rush and feel less anxious.

* Have your child go to bed early so s/he can get a good night's rest.

Reinforce these testing tips for your children:

*Get plenty of rest each night

*Eat a good breakfast

much time on one question.

*Check over your work/answer when you're done.

*Review a little each day so the information is more likely to stick. The more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel.

*It's OK if you don't know every answer.

I hope this list helps!

How Parents Can Help

*Express confidence in your child's ability to do their best- let children know that although scores are important, they don't define them as a person. Your expectation is that they try their hardest. Many students have shared with me that one aspect that makes them anxious is their parents giving them negative consequences for certain

*Have a Positive attitude ("I can do this.") *Relax (take deep breaths) *Try your best *Read directions carefully *Think before you answer a question *Don't Rush, but don't spend too

When it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it will be autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

The 1st day of spring 2019 in Northern Hemisphere will be on Wednesday, March 20th. And the last day of spring equinox 2019 will be on Friday, June 21st.

The first day of spring, the vernal equinox, has 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. The term vernal is Latin for "spring" and equinox is Latin for "equal night".

In spring, the Earth's axis is tilted toward the sun, increasing the number of daylight hours and bringing warmer weather.

Before Spring was called Spring, it was called Lent in Old English. Starting in the 14th century, that time of year was called "springing time"--a reference to plants "springing" from the ground. In the 15th century this got shortened to "spring-time," and then further shortened in the 16th century to just "spring".
