Parkview Cross County would like to invite you to be a part of our 2019 team. Since you will find the high school cross country experience to differ significantly from Middle School XC, I’ve asked a few of our athletes, over the years, to say something about it to you.

What appeals to you about cross country?

I love the cross country environment. All the runners treat each other equally. Everybody is supportive. It is like being in a big family. Sayra Villela (2012 senior - All-State CC Runner in 2012)

I just love to run. It is my passion. I love running. Cameron Byrley (2013 senior - All-State CC Runner in 2013)

There’s a lot to life. Academics, family, and friendships, but the most important thing to me is running. I never did any physical activity as a child, and I regret that it took till my freshman year of track to even consider running. Now, I’m fully dedicated and will never stop running. Cross country fulfils my life, and it’s where I belong. It’s where everyone belongs. Dario Mendez (2011 senior, 2018 assistant volunteer coach)

Since I had always played soccer (I started to play when I was 3), I did not run cross country as a freshman. However, I was convinced to come out my sophomore year, and I love it. I love the way it is just you running against yourself. I, also, love the closeness we have on the cross country team. We are the closest team in the school. We all have a blast running and hanging out with one another. I regret not running my freshman year every day, but I look forward to running in college. Running has become a part of who I am. Keaghan Economon (2011 senior - All-State CC Runner in 2011 and scholarship XC runner at Colorado School of the Mines)

I love the milkshakes. Ben Mai (2011 senior) (Each Monday after a meet we gather together at McDonalds to celebrate any new personal records. Coach buys the milkshakes).

I love the competiveness, the coaches and the people, but, most importantly, you are not a number that can be replaced. Everyone has value to the team. Elijah Stevens (2018 sophomore)

Cross country is both a team and an individual sport. Athletes run distances that vary for freshman (1.5 miles - 3.1 miles) to almost exclusively 5Ks (3.1 miles) for sophomores through seniors. The races are run in parks, on golf courses, college campuses, and other grassy venues that are appropriate for competition. We have freshman, JV and varsity teams. In each competition, providing we can field enough runners, an athlete gets to compete as an individual and as a team. The top five runners score for the team and try to win a team trophy. Individually, each athlete tries to place in the top group of runners (usually between 15 -30 are recognized at each race) to win a medal. As you have read, everyone is very supportive of each other, and no matter where a runner finishes, he or she is exuberantly cheered on by their team.

You have just seen a picture of Parkview’s 2015 girls’ and guys’ cross country teams. Continue reading and you will find about the summer off-season program, cross country highlights, requirements to participate and the competition schedule. (Unfortunately, I don’t have an electronic copy of the 2016 through 2018 teams)

Parkview Cross Country 2019

I’m excited about you being a part of this upcoming cross country season. It is going to be a lot of fun, filled with new experiences and great opportunities for you to develop your potential as an athlete and become a part of a great team sport. Below you will see an outline of some of the featured activities for the upcoming summer and cross country seasons.

• Summer cross country group training begins on Monday, June 3rd at 6:00 AM. We will meet at Phelps Grove (the west parking lot) and continue to meet Monday – Friday through August 2nd (The exceptions are noted below). We should finish each day around 7:00 -7:30AM. We will be following the Jack Daniel’s distance running program, considered by many to be the world’s best. You are going to get into great shape, and you are going to love it!

• Our annual float trip is on the Niangua River on Saturday, June 15th. Parents are welcome to join us. The cost is $19 to float.

• You will have two opportunities to compete at a track meet in the month of June, They are on the Tuesdays of June 11th and June 25th at 7:00 PM at the Rogersville Track. These meets are free and are sponsored by Fleet Feet.

• Thursday, July 4th, we are going to serve as volunteers at the Fleet Feet 4 for the 4th race. For each volunteer we provide, Parkview XC will receive $20. This $20 is directly applied to the XC runner who volunteers (and any additional volunteers who volunteer for him/her) towards covering his/her season expenses. We need 20 volunteers for about an 1½ hour commitment.

• SWMO running camp is Wednesday July 24th – Sunday July 28th. All cross country athletes are encouraged to attend this running camp. It is a great team-building experience where Parkview gets to train with teams from across the state in a camp designed to a make the running experience fun and beneficial. Many coaches along with 30 some college athletes will run with you and provide running clinics throughout the week. Check it out and sign up under Parkview at

• We have a state mandated Athlete No Contact week from August 3rd through the 11th (one week and two weekends). There is no organized coach-led practice during this week. You are encouraged to run on your own or, if possible, with your team mates under your own supervision.

• ***The official cross country season begins on Monday, August 12th. From this point on, each practice day counts as an official practice towards the state required 14 days for meet eligibility. For the first practice we will meet at the Meadowmere parking lot on the north side of Parkview High School at 6:00 AM on Monday, August 12th. Since school starts the very next day on, Tuesday, August 13th, the practices will then change to being directly after school at 3:10 PM.

• On Tuesday, August 20th at 6:30 P.M. we will have our cookout. This is when your parents get to meet the booster club, other parents, other athletes and the coaches, and this is also when I get to talk to your parents as a group.

• Shortly after school starts our competitive season begins. Take a close look at the meet schedule on the following page. The ST. Louis and Lawrence (Rim Rock Farm), Kansas meets are overnight trips. We will travel on the Friday before both of these meets, stay in a hotel and compete the next day. After the St. Louis meet, we will go to the St. Louis Zoo and after the Kansas meet we will go to Worlds of Fun.
