BOY MEETS DEATH AS SMALL WAGON GOES OFF BRIDGE

Four-Year-Old Merle Helsel, of Scalp Level, Drowned in Paint Creek

BODY IS RECOVERED

Special to the Tribune

SCALP LEVEL, March 15 – Believed to have lost control of a small coaster wagon on which he was riding, four-year-old Merle Helsel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Helsel, of Bridge street, late yesterday afternoon plunged to his death in the swollen waters of Paint Creek. The body was recovered a quarter of a mile from the bridge spanning the creek and from which the Helsel boy’s wagon plunged into the stream.

Ernest Hankey, employed as a fireman by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company here, and who was attracted to the scene of the accident, waded into the stream and carried the boy ashore. Although obliged to battle against the strong current of the stream, which had been swollen considerably by heavy rains, Hankey succeeded in effecting the rescue, but was practically exhausted when he reached the shore.

Members of the Scalp Level and Pain Volunteer Fire Company were called out when Burgess W. H. Lehman spread the alarm and said today that Hankey came dangerously near being swallowed up by the strong current. Hankey fell as he neared the shore with the Helsel boy and was taken from the water by George Baumgardner and George Schalles, members of the fire company.

Discovery of the accident was made by the Helsel boy’s mother and it is believed that the child had been in the water for at least 15 minutes. There were no eyewitnesses to the accident.

With his small coaster wagon, which he had received from his parents as a gift, the child left the parental home yesterday afternoon about 2 o’clock to visit at the Barefoot home, which is located on a small grade leading to the bridge spanning Paint Creek.

Shortly after 3 o’clock the boy left for his home. He started to coast down the unpaved grade in his wagon, and it is believed that as he reached a point about half way across the 35-foot span he lost control and plunged into the stream.

Becoming alarmed at her small son’s absence Mrs. Helsel went to the Barefoot home and was advised that the child had left about 15 minutes before. As Mrs. Helsel was making a search for the boy she observed the wagon, lodged against the bank of the stream, about 25 feet from the bridge.

Rescue workers said today that the swiftness of the current probably kept the body from sinking.

Volunteer fireman attempted to revive the boy by artificial respiration, and when this proved futile he was rushed to the Windber Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hankey said that he believed he observed a faint pulse beat as he rescued the boy, but hospital attaches said that the boy had been dead for several minutes before he was admitted to the institution.

Coroner Cyrus W. Davis, of Conemaugh, conducted an investigation last night. No inquest will be necessary, it was announced.

While a railing on the bridge was missing, having been knocked off some time ago, it was said today that the small wagon probably would have gone under the railing and into the stream, even if it had been in place. Paint Creek usually has water to a depth of about a foot, but the heavy rains have swollen the stream to a height of about four and one-half feet.

The victim is survived by his parents and a sister, Violet Jane, aged two years.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Evangelical Church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock, in charge of the Rev. D. G. Baumgardner. Interment will be in the Dunmire Cemetery at Elton, in charge of Lloyd Shank, local mortician.
