Welcome to another year of Skills.
This has been stated in many letters and in many ways but it is always a good way to start. The philosophy: Skills runs like any extra-curricular activity. We, the Skills Teachers and Coaches, practice outside of the regular school hours. Our skills competitors are proud to be part of the team and participating in a school event. Our competitors practice hard and are not guaranteed spots into NW Regionals or Provincials because of the amount of interest generated in the program. Every year our number of participants grows – to the point where we have to host an in-school competition to determine who is a regional and provincial competitor. We, however, want to involve as many students as possible.
Calendar of Events
• March 4 & 5 – Fine Arts Gala – preparing, cooking and serving (practice – costs covered)
• Mar. 28 – April 7 – Easter Break
• April 12 and 13 – St. Joseph In-School Competition. We have many teams in many areas. We need to practice and provide a ranking so that we know who to register for the NW Regional Skills Competition and Skills Alberta. More information to follow
• April 25 and 26 – NW Regional Skills Competition (Fairview)
• May 14, 15, 16 – Skills Alberta Competition (Edmonton)
• May 17 – Grad Breakfast fundraiser (tentative) GRADS – THIS IS YOUR CAP AND GOWN DAY!
• June 5 -8 – National Skills Canada Competition (Vancouver, BC)
April 12 and 13 – St. Joseph In-School Competition FORMAT: We feel it is important for our students to be recognized within our team and find ways to build this team between our competitors. We need the ranking for the next level of competitions.
Friday, April 12: Competition in all skills areas, both regionally and provincially. Teachers are looking for judges – please let us know if you are able to assist us. Individual competition times will be determined as soon as possible.
Saturday, April 13: Competition in all skills areas, both regionally and provincially. Individual competition times will be determined as soon as possible.
SATURDAY, APRIL 13 – 5:30 pm – SKILLS POTLUCK BANQUET – we invite parents and family members to join us in a meal.
• Winners in each competition area will be determined that night. The ranking for NW Regionals and Provincials will be determined.
• It is important to understand that we are able to take ‘alternates’. Students should keep practicing and stay involved even if they do not place in the top three.
FUNDRAISING:
Students and their parents interested in the SKILLS program before Christmas took part in a variety of fundraising activities. We catered the Football Banquet and Turkey Dinner. We cooked over 600 pounds of turkey (not a typo). Students cooked and sold hamburgers at lunch. There were raffle draws. We had a Regal Sales event that is still ongoing. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.
Students and/or their parents who assisted in the fundraising activities will not pay the entire $100 commitment fee. This commitment fee helps us purchase the supplies we need for practice as well as the kits we need to compete. Individual competition areas will determine the costs required for practice and the teacher (coach) will let your child know how much to pay.
• ONGOING FUNDRAISER: Regal (a company that sells Christmas items and household goods) – see website for more information ( - Please post on your facebook accounts or websites so that we can continue to make money – they look after sales so it really is an easy way to make money.
• Company Donations – we have a donation letter. It is posted on the website. Please pass on to companies that may be interested. Many companies require the letter.
COSTS:
• COMMITMENT FEE: $100 if you have not participated in any fundraising activities. Individual teacher/coaches will determine how much to charge.
• St. Joe’s In School Competition: $30 – covers supplies for competition, 1st – 3rd prizes
• NW Regional Competition (Fairview): $75 – Covers registration, accommodations, travel
• Skills Alberta (Edmonton): $250 – covers registration, accommodations, travel, activity
Skills Apparel: An order form for skills apparel is included with this letter. Our students have organized this and have created the logo to go on the apparel. Students do not have to purchase apparel. In order to look like a team, we will ask your competitor to wear our jacket (from previous years) or wear something green.
Please contact me (Leanne Germann) via e-mail (leannegermann@gpcsd.ca) if you are willing to donate time and/or donations for the potluck supper. If you have questions – contact Leanne Germann or the teacher/coach of the competition area.
