OUR LENTEN MISSION MARCH 11-12-13 with

Fr. Jerome Cudden, O.P.

HAVING A MARY HEART IN A MARTHA WORLD

--TUESDAY, APRIL 9

HERE AT SAINT JOSEPH 9:15-10:30 am or 7:30-9:00 pm

Come and revitalize your spiritual center.

Join Barbara D'Arrigo, former Pastoral Associate for faith formation at Our Lady of Visitation in Paramus, as she talks about the spirituality of Mary and the service of Martha, with prayer included from the bestselling book by Joanna Weaver.

Barbara will help us to explore scripture to see what Jesus said 2,000 years ago about how to put Him first.

The workshop will take place at Saint Joseph's Retreat House (on Grand Street behind our church). In addition to scripture and prayer, there will be activities and discussion.

This very special hour and a half is OPEN TO EVERYONE, both women and men. Please let us know which session (morning or evening) you would like to attend by calling the Parish Office at 201-261-0148 by April 3. You are encouraged to bring your own Bible, but scriptural passages will also be available on handouts.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 31, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

Father James Keller (1900-1977) founded the Christophers in 1945, launching its News Notes the next year. He also wrote a syndicated newspaper column ("Three Minutes a Day") and more than 25 books, among them You Can Change the World. The Christophers' famous motto, "Better to light one candle than curse the darkness," originally a Chinese proverb, sought to encourage Catholics to use their places and work in the world to further God's ways. Father Keller was fond of a quotation from the American drama critic and author John Mason Brown:

No one, I am convinced, can be happy who lives only for himself. The joy of living comes from immersion in something that we know to be bigger, better, more enduring and worthier than we are. People, ideas, causes--these offer the one possible escape not merely from selfishness but from the hungers of solitude and the sorrows of aimlessness ... The only true happiness comes from squandering ourselves for a purpose.

Brown's observation is in line with a remark of Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the Lutheran theologian and biblical scholar who later became a medical doctor, achieving world fame and a Nobel Peace Prize for his work among lepers in Lambarene, in what was then French Equatorial Africa.

I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.

This weekend we welcome students and faculty from our Archdiocesan seminary, whose visit has been arranged by Father Anthony. They remind us that Catholics are still answering the Lord's call (or "vocation") to service with their lives. In doing so, they are keeping faith with a summons of one of the New Testament's letters:

"Each one of you has received a special grace, so, like good stewards responsible for all these different graces of God, put yourselves at the service of others" (1 Pt 4, 10).

And they do so not only out of a general attraction to goodness but out of a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ, their primary commitment.

For many years, Monsignor John Gilchrist, who died recently, wrote a fine regular column for our Catholic newspaper. In one of them he said superbly that

"... our life is our sermon--our love is our story, like Jesus--only if we give ourselves in love-- others will follow our footsteps."

(continued above)

That expresses the central reality just right, I think.

The great modern theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar once reminded us that

We are here to love--to love God and our neighbor. Whoever will unravel the meaning of existence must accept this fundamental principle from whose center light is shed on all the dark recesses of our lives. For this love to which we are called is not a circumscribed or limited love, not a love defined, as it were, by the measure of our human weakness. It does not allow us to submit just one part of our lives

to it and the rest, if we will, to our own interests.

The call to priesthood, or to any authentic Catholic vocation, whether exercised in a life of specific commitment to serving the Church or in the crucially important life of the laity in our world, is well described in his words. Some years ago I saw a prayer card from the Sacred Heart Fathers of Hales Corners, Wisconsin. It was intended to call on us to pray for vocations, and did its work nicely. Perhaps you can incorporate it into your own prayers, asking the Lord both to send us religious vocations and to bolster the vocational awareness of everyone who is Catholic.

Gracious God, you have blessed me with many gifts and talents. Grant me the wisdom to know how best to use them for the glory of your name.

Jesus calls, `Come follow me.' I want to follow him and be faithful to my call. Help me to see in myself what you see, and give me the courage to follow wherever you may lead.

Bless the Church with generous hearts, eager to serve your people and to spread your Word. Amen.

Msgr. David Hubba

WE WELCOME OUR SEMINARIANS

--THIS WEEKEND, MARCH 30-31

Please help us welcome the following seminarians who are visiting our church today: Ariel Bautista, Brian Connors, Christian Scalo, Robert Burkot, John DeCristofaro, and one who attended our own Saint Joseph School--Matthew Gonzalez. They are accompanied by Msgr. Joseph Reilly (Seminary Rector), Fr. Christopher Ciccarino and Fr. Pablo Gadenz, members of the Seminary faculty.

Please stop by their tables at either entrance to the church to say hello. They will be happy to answer your questions. And please keep all our seminarians, and anyone discerning a vocation to the priesthood or religious life, in your prayers. Matthew Gonzalez

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A)

PERIOD OF PURIFICATION AND ENLIGHTENMENT

Rite of Scrutinies

The Period of Purification and Enlightenment, which began with the celebration of the Rite of Election and the Rite of Continuing Conversion for

our RCIA Elect and Candidates the first weekend of Lent, continues with the Rite of Scrutinies specifically for our Elect who are awaiting baptism and full

initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. The Scrutinies are very

special rites celebrated on the middle three Sundays of Lent, a time during

which both the Elect and the parish community devote to spiritual recollection in preparation for the celebration of the Paschal mystery. This period provides the

Elect with time for more intense spiritual preparation and interior reflection through self-searching, reflection, prayer and repentance to purify and

RCIA Elect Saleem Shareef (center) with his enlighten the minds and hearts as they prepare for Baptism and full initiation.

Sponsor and father-in-law Larry Mushinske The Scrutinies are meant to uncover and heal sin, as well as to bring out and

and Father Anthony at the Rite of Scrutiny strengthen more of the inner and true self by illustrating how we all should have

celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of Lent at our 9:00 am Mass.

faith that when sin comes to light it will vanish in the healing power of Christ. The rite seeks to inspire in the Elect a desire for purification and

enlightenment by Christ within three Scrutinies. The spirit of the Elect is filled with Christ the Redeemer, who is

the living water (The Samaritan Woman at the Well, from the Gospel of John 4:5-42, in the First Scrutiny), the light

of the world (The Man Born Blind, from the Gospel of John 9:1-41, in the Second Scrutiny), and the resurrection and the life (The Raising of Lazarus, from the Gospel of John 11:1-45, in the Third Scrutiny). Over the course of the

Scrutinies, the Elect will progress in their perception of sin and in their desire for salvation.

The Scrutinies really call for self-searching by the Elect themselves, through the instructions and prayers of the

rite, to look deep into their own hearts and lives and evaluate their own readiness as they approach the end of their

Lenten journey and the celebration of the Easter Sacraments. The instructions, prayers and blessings of the rite,

not only call upon the elect, but us who participate in these rites as well, to ask and to acknowledge how sin and

temptation can surround us from day to day. By recognizing this reality in our lives and world today, we are better able to confront them

LOOKING AHEAD--2019-2020 RCIA

head-on and commit ourselves to living, as best we can, the call of a

life of holiness as members of the Church.

As we pray for our elect going through the Scrutinies these next three

weekends, it is good for us to all to join in searching our hearts and lives

as we consider how we are living up to the promises of our Baptism and

being strengthened in Christ through receiving the Sacraments,

especially

Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

"No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan."

(Joshua 5:12) Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God's blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need.
