Jesus is Born! - On Monday we will celebrate one of the most important days in the history of the world. That day when God pierced the clouds and broke ever more intimately

into our human existence by sending us His Son. Beginning with our Christmas Eve liturgies the liturgical season of Christmas begins. During this season, we celebrate the birth

of Christ into our world and into our hearts.

I invite you stop at the manger scene in front of the

church (inside or outside) or at the one you may

have put up in your own house. As you peer upon the scene pause to consider

how much God loves you. God becomes one like us to show us how to live in this

world, and then shows the full depth of His love by His death on the cross. God

made himself little, a little baby, born in a stable to a mom and foster father far, far

from home. He was born amidst animals and first visited by the poor shepherds of

the region.

In his 2009 Christmas homily Pope Benedict XVI said this: ¡°God's sign is His

humility. God's sign is that He makes himself small; He becomes a child; He lets

us touch Him and He asks for our love. How we would prefer a different sign, an

imposing, irresistible sign of God's power and greatness! But His sign summons

us to faith and love, and thus it gives us hope: this is what God is like. He has

power, He is Goodness itself. He invites us to become like Him. Yes indeed, we

become like God if we allow ourselves to be shaped by this sign; if we ourselves learn humility and hence true greatness; if we renounce violence and use only the weapons of truth and love.¡±

Still more wondrously, Jesus continues to humble himself by coming to us each time we gather for Mass. He humbles

himself over and over again as we recall His sacrifice on the cross. Every Eucharist is like Christmas where the bread

and wine are transformed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and, in a sense, He is born anew on the altar.

As He humbles Himself to come to us, may we readily humble ourselves as we come to Him each week recognizing

how very much we need Him in our lives; how much we need to be nourished and strengthened by His Body and Blood

for this journey of life. It is my prayer that on Christmas you go home with joy because the love of Jesus is brought to

life in your own life and family. May your memory of Christmas always include how much God loves you and wants to

live in and through you. As you leave church on Christmas we will have an ornament for you. Along with the crest of

the parish is a quote from Pope Francis that reads: ¡°Let the Church always be a place of MERCY and HOPE, where

EVERYONE IS WELCOMED, LOVED and FORGIVEN.¡± We pray that as a parish we live up that message and invite

you to be part of that message to our community as well. In the name of all of the Friars, Deacon Joe, the Sisters, and

the entire staff of the Basilica we wish everyone a very Blessed Christmas. If you are traveling we pray that your trip is

safe and we look forward to seeing you when you return. Weso?ych ?wi?t Bo?ego Narodzenia!!

Christmas Masses - Please see page 8 for the complete Christmas Mass schedule. The Christmas Masses begin at

4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Next Weekend and January 1 - Once again see page 8 for next weekend¡¯s Mass schedule. It is the regular weekend

Mass schedule. Normally January 1st (New Year¡¯s Day) is a Holy Day of Obligation celebrating Mary, Mother of God.

However, when it falls on a Monday or Saturday the obligation to attend Mass is waived. Therefore, there are NO vigil

Masses next Sunday for New Year¡¯s Day. Masses on January 1 are at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 Noon and 7:00 p.m. in Polish.

Christmas Concert on January 7 - To close out our celebration of the Christmas season our parish choirs will host a

Christmas Concert on Sunday, January 7th from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Upper Basilica. January 7 will be the Feast of

Epiphany (Three Kings) and the last day of the Christmas season. All three parish choirs are preparing a very nice program for our enjoyment. There will also be some light refreshments available afterwards in the vestibule. There is no

cost to attend. Join us as we wrap up the Christmas season.

2018 Parish Calendar - It is expected that you will be receiving the 2018 Parish Calendar as you

leave church today. For today, please take one per family. Once everyone has the opportunity to

get one there will likely be more available for you to take next week. Special thanks to Maryanne

Cierpial and Cierpial Funeral Home as well as Joe Kozikowski and Kozikowski Funeral Home for

underwriting the cost of the parish calendars. A special word of thanks to Jan Peters for all of the

PAGE THREE

work she did on the planning and layout of the calendar once again this year. Our 2018 Parish Calendar highlights some

of the central elements of Franciscan Spirituality. I hope that as you use the calendar throughout the year that the prayers and themes contained there can be a way of becoming more attuned with a Franciscan spirituality in your lives.

Parish Office Holiday Schedule - The Parish offices will be closed on Monday and Tuesday December 25th and 26th

and Friday, December 29th as well as Monday, January 1st.

Christmas Flower and Meal Memorials - Included as an insert in the bulletin are all who

made Christmas Memorial donations for Flowers and/or Meals. Those included met the

first printing deadline. Those received later will be included in the January 7th bulletin. As

you can see your gifts have allowed us to decorate the Basilica so beautifully in praise and

honor of God. Your gifts also give praise to God by helping the poor through your Meal

Memorials. Once everything is in and accounted for I will give a final accounting. Thanks

to everyone for being so generous.

Angel Tree - Thanks to everyone who took an angel and brought in a gift for those who are less fortunate.

point we know that over 218 gifts were donated. Thank you, again!!

At this

Divine Mercy Prayer Cenacle - Just a reminder that since we are having a Christmas Concert on Sunday January 7th

the Divine Mercy Prayer Cenacle will not be held that day. It will resume on Sunday, February 4th.

Final Thoughts - The Patriots pulled victory out of the grasp of defeat thanks to the NFL¡¯s definition of a catch! The

Ravens and Bills both won games against lesser competition with the Bills heading to Foxborough this week. Amazingly both could join the Pats in the playoffs. Ravens control their own destiny, but the Bills need others to lose. Have a

Blessed Christmas and may the 12 days of Christmas be a time of great joy and rejoicing in just how much God loves

you. - Fr. Joe

BLESSING THAT CAN BE USED FOR YOUR HOME MANGERS

God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made

known your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born

of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.

Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of

Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all. We

pray that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph will guide, love, and protect our family. We make

this prayer in Jesus' name. Amen.

WHO IS A PARISHIONER OF ST. STANISLAUS? While the answer may seem obvious to some, others frequently

ask for clarification on requirements for being considered a parishioner. We hope the following helps those who may be

unsure. First, a parishioner is formally registered with St. Stanislaus Parish. A faithful parishioner attends Mass regularly, participates in church activities, and contributes to the support of the parish as best they can. Parishioners have their

children baptized here and enroll them in our school or CCD program. Assuming they meet other requirements, they are

eligible to receive parish certificates enabling them to serve as Godparents or Confirmation sponsors. They may be married here, and they may have funerals here. Sometimes people assume they are parishioners because they have been

coming here for years, although they may have never formally registered. If you are not sure if you are registered,

please call the parish office at (413) 594-6669.

THE SAN DAMIANO YOUTH MUSIC MINISTRY here at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus

is seeking new musicians to join our talented group. All talents are welcome including singers, pianists, guitarists, drummers, violinists, cellists and flutists. Our group is currently comprised of various members ranging from ages 8 to 20. We provide music for the 6:00 p.m.

Mass each Saturday and practice 30 minutes prior to each Mass. If you are interested in joining, please contact Chris Marini at (413) 262-1325.
