SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

ONLY THE BEST

AT SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL

OUR AWARD-WINNING PRINCIPAL

Very few, if any, elementary schools have a principal with more professional qualifications and awards than Saint Joseph School. Dr. Paula Valenti brings 40 years of combined classroom and administrative experience to her role as principal here. She holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Seton Hall University, a Master of Arts in Elementary Education with a specialization in Gifted and Talented, and a Bachelor of Arts in Education with certification in Kindergarten through Grade 12. She began her professional career as an art teacher in the Montclair gifted and talented magnet schools, went on to teach at Dumont High School, and then spent 18 years teaching in the Ridgewood, NJ pubic school system. After years of seeing how the Arts were continually threatened by budget cuts, she sought a place at the decision -making table and moved to administration. Her roles there have included being supervisor of 72 schools in Newark, assistant principal and then principal of Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, and principal of Emerson Jr/Sr High School in Emerson, NJ. She is the recipient of three Governor's Awards, is a Fellow of the Art Educators of New Jersey and is a founding member of Hand and Mind Institute, which offered professional development seminars on college campuses. She capped her very distinguished career as Superintendent of Glen Rock Public Schools. When she retired from public education in 2017, she sent her credentials to the Archdiocese of Newark. A product of Catholic elementary education herself, having attended St. Anne's Catholic School in Garwood, NJ, Dr. Valenti wasn't ready to hang up her educator/administrator hat. Eager to share her experience and skills with today's Catholic school students and families, she was delighted to find herself assigned to Saint Joseph School in Oradell/New Milford--and we have been truly blessed by her presence here. She has already created some exciting initiatives at SJS, including the monthly Lancer Cafe at which students invite distinguished guests from the community to dine with them as they polish their table manners and conversation skills. She has expanded our student drama program (the spring production will be "The Great Gatsby"), integrated our library, media and technology curriculum, and created a winter lunch recess enrichment program with everything from chess and cooking to Lego construction and crafting. She will be introducing a new reading and language arts program in the Fall, has implemented the "parent portal" online program that allows parents to directly access a student's progress and is looking into expanding "the greenhouse," our early childhood education program, Stop by one of Saint Joseph School's Open Houses (Feb. 26, Mar. 20, or Apr. 16--see ad opposite) or call anytime (201-261-2388) to meet Dr. Valenti and see all the exciting things happening under her leadership!

Fr. Jerome Cudden, O.P., entered the novitiate of the Dominican order in 1999 and was ordained in 2007. He holds Master's degrees in Theology and Divinity. Fr. Jerome is currently the pastor of St. Dominic's Church In Benecia, CA. He led last year's very successful mission at Saint Joseph on "The Three Stages of the Christian Life."

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 24, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

Above the side doors of our church near the sanctuary are four stained glass windows that symbolically represent the evangelists the gospels are named after. Their traditional images are ultimately derived from the Old Testament Book of Ezekiel (1, 1-21), in which the prophet relates a vision of "figures resembling four living creatures" (1, 5), each having four faces:

Their faces were like this: each of the four had the face of a man, but on the right side was the face of a lion, and on the left side the face of an ox, and finally each had the face of an eagle (1, 10).

Luke's symbol is the ox, which calls attention both to Christ's sacrifice of his life for us and to the gospel's account of the priestly work of Zechariah, John the Baptist's father (1, 5-25).

John's gospel has a characteristic soaring spirit that Rev. Peter Klein has described well in his very useful catechetical resource the Catholic Source Book: "John is called the rising eagle, since his gaze pierces so far into the mysteries of heaven and his version of the gospel begins with a lofty prologue that is a poem of the Word become flesh."

Our Faith sometimes makes transformative use of its Old Testament heritage, as, for example, when Jewish bath rituals are recruited for Baptism. And so Ezekiel's representation is later taken up (or "baptized" to give it Christian meaning) by the last book of the Bible, Revelation, which describes a vision of the heavenly court, with the four living creatures centered around the throne:

The first creature resembled a lion, the second was like a calf, the third had a face like that of a human being, and the fourth looked like an eagle in flight (Rv 4, 7).

The prominent early Church writers St. Irenaeus and St. Jerome then further secured the symbols so that they came to characterize the authors of the gospels. Irenaeus wrote that "The lion signifies the royalty of Christ, the calf his priestly office, the man his incarnation and the eagle the grace of the Holy Spirit." Jerome, in his commentaries on Ezekiel and Matthew, associated the man with Matthew, the lion with Mark, the ox with Luke and the eagle with John.

Matthew is depicted as a human being to show the human nature of Christ, something Mt emphasizes in its genealogy of Jesus (1, 1-17). (When Mt is illustrated as an angel, as he sometimes is, the usual explanation is that Joseph's acceptance of angelic revelations are important in Mt 1, 20 and 2, 13).

Mark is represented as a lion because of his gospel's emphasis on Jesus as a king--and the lion is the king of beasts. Besides, Mk 1, 2-3, quoting from Isaiah, describes the work of John the Baptist, the messenger who announces the coming of Christ, as "a voice of one crying out in the desert: prepare the way of the Lord...." (v. 3), putting us in mind of a lion's great roar. (continued above)

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION

OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A.)

This weekend Saint Joseph Church will celebrate the Rite of Sending at the Saturday 5:00 pm Mass. Our Catechumen and Candidates will then celebrate the Rite of Election and the Rite of Continuing Conversion at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on the weekend of March 9-10. Accompanied by Fr. Anthony and our RCIA Team, our Catechumen will appear before Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, with the assurance of our parish's care, support and discernment, and be recognized as Elect and deemed ready to enter into the final period of preparation for initiation. That same weekend, our Candidates will express their intention to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church. As the Archdiocese welcomes and accepts our parish Catechumen/Elect and Candidates on their journey to full initiation in the sacraments this coming Easter, please keep them in your prayers that they may continue to be nurtured with the Word of God and the Cross of Our Savior.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

"But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without expecting anything back." (Luke 6:35)

Easier said than done, right? But if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Mercy and compassion wil put us on the path to holiness.
