Fall 2012 College Attendance for Freshmen Who Were Admitted but ChoseNot to Enroll at UMass BostonIn fall 2012, UMass Boston admitted 4,835 new freshmen. Of those, 1,267 enrolled at UMass Boston and 3,568 chose not to enroll. The Office of Institutional Research and Policy Studies (OIRP) used our access to National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) data to identify higher education institutions that the students who chose not to enroll here attended instead. Of the 3,568 students we queried NSC about, 2,913 were located at another college or university. The NSC could not locate 655 of the students. This does not mean that those students did not attend another institution. Their institutions may not have reported yet this semester, or the students may have blocked reporting of their locations, attended institutions that do not participate in the NSC, or made it impossible for the NSC to identify them by changing a detail of their name (middle initial, suffix, spelling, etc.) because of peculiarities in the way NSC identifies students. A full listing of the colleges attended is provided in Appendix I beginning on page 5. One hundred one of the students who did not enroll at UMass Boston attended a two-year college instead. Fifty-nine attended a Massachusetts public two-year college and 41 attended a public two-year school out of state. One student attended a private two-year out of state. There was some speculation that such a large number of students attending two-year schools might be explained by those seeking nursing programs, but this was not the case. None of the students had applied for a nursing major at UMass Boston, and more than a third were undecided on a major when they applied here. Those attending a two-year school tended to have lower SAT scores and high school GPAs. The numbers of students attending the Massachusetts two-year schools are displayed in Table 1. None of those institutions had more than 2 of the students. All but one student attended public two-year schools. The full listing is in the appendix. About 24% of the students who did not enroll here attended another Massachusetts public four-year school, a total of 855 students. Almost two thirds of those students chose another UMass campus. The numbers of students at each Massachusetts public four-year are displayed in Table 2. Suffolk University was the most popular by far, with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Wentworth Institute second and third. This is the same order as with the 2011 cohort. Overall, the students attended 47 different private schools in Massachusetts.A listing of those institutions enrolling 10 or more of the students is presented in Table 4 with the remainder in the appendix. The students were located at 166 different private four-year schools in 32 states across the country. A relative few institutions had as many as ten of the students, and most of them were in the northeast. Those institutions with at least ten of the students attending are listed in Table 5, with the full listing in the appendix.Table 5: Attendance at Out-of-State Private Four-Year SchoolsOther Private Four-Year CollegesNumber of StudentsQuinnipiac University20American University17Pace University13Bryant University12Drexel University12Hofstra University12Syracuse University12University of Hartford12University of Tampa12Ithaca College10Johnson & Wales University10New York University10Salve Regina University10The Appendix begins on the following page.
