FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 21, 2014

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Last week we were greeted with the disturbing news that a group called Out@NBCUniversal will be allowed to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, a Catholic Irish parade which has been going on since 1762. Over the past two decades homosexual groups have been trying to enter the parade under their own banner so as to say to us: we participate in immoral behavior that the Church defines as disordered, that is against the natural law and sinful and we want to march in a Catholic procession. Could the realm of the absurd grow ever deeper? Since Cardinal O'Connor's time as Archbishop of New York, the requests of homosexual groups to march in the parade under their own banner have been rightfully denied, but last year Guinness Beer withdrew its sponsorship from the parade run by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. I am confident that other sponsors have withdrawn support. This phenomenon is happening to the Boy Scouts too who have seen UPS, Northrop Corp., and others withdraw their financial support of the Scouts forcing them to compromise their principles and their right to freely assemble.

What bothers me most is that Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York said that he has confidence in the decision of the Ancient Order of Hibernians to allow the Out@NBCUniversal to march in the parade, a parade which will pass by the Cathedral of St. Patrick and will have His Eminence as the Grand Marshall! He said, “I have no trouble with the decision at all. I think the decision is a wise one.” I am confident that men and women who have homosexual attraction have been in the parade, after all they make up about 2-4% of the population. There are also pedophiles, prostitutes, drug pushers, Mafiosi, etc in the parade and amongst the spectators, but do we allow these people to march under their own banners? Could we see in the future the Cosa Nostra for Justice, Prostitutes for Legal Status, or Keep Abortion Legal banners? On top of this a pro-life Catholic organization has been denied space in the parade prompting the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights which has participated in the parade for 20 years to withdraw from the parade.

But what is most disturbing is that the Archbishop of New York has acquiesced to the decision. St. Augustine warned about this desire of the shepherds to be fed and clothed by the sheep rather than the shepherd feeding his sheep. The honors of office, represented by the red robes and miters, are not to be esteemed over the teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and over virtue, holiness and spiritual fortitude in the face of persecution which today takes the form of withdrawal of financial support and non-stop slamming from the media, a.k.a. the entertainment world. We as Catholics need to stick to our guns and defend the Church and her teachings even when it means loss of status, wealth and even liberty. Right now in Iraq, Catholics are losing their lives to remain Catholic under the threat of Islamists like ISIS who demand under the threat of death that Christians in their conquered territories either deny their faith in Christ Jesus and convert, leave their homes, or die. Let us pray that Cardinal Dolan may be strong in the face of opposition for we are all weak and can only find our strength in our faith in Christ Jesus. I leave you with these words of St. Augustine:

Yes, clothing can well be taken to mean honor, since it covers nakedness. For every man without exception is weak. And who is any man placed over you except someone just like yourself. Your pastor is in the flesh, he is mortal, he eats, sleeps and awakens; he was born and he is going to die. In himself he is, when you think of it, simply a man. But it is true that you make him something more by giving him honor; it is as if you were covering what is weak

“When I called, You Answered”

Back to School!

September is always a very exciting time throughout our Archdiocese! For many families, September means back to school. Our Catholic School elementary and high schools have opened their doors to over 34,000 young people throughout our four counties. In addition, many of our Religious Education programs in our 219 Parishes are gearing up for their new classes of Catechetical studies.

This year, OUR parish has 330 registered for our Religious Education program. It is going to be a great year for the children involved in our catechesis program!

In addition, Archdiocesan Campus Ministers on 9 different college campuses throughout the Archdiocese are currently evangelizing thousands of college students, and are working hard to bring the truth and love of the Gospels to these campuses. In addition, we have welcomed 125 Seminarians to Saint Andrew’s College Seminary, Mater Dei Seminary, and Immaculate Conception Seminary.

All of these programs could not be achieved without your help. Over $14.5 million is given by the Archdiocese to Parishes, Catholic Schools, Campus Ministry, and the Seminary for these programs and ministries to operate. The Annual Appeal helps to offset many of these programs and ministries, which are essential to the future of our Faith, and are essential for bringing brothers and sisters into a deep personal relationship with Our Lord, Jesus Christ. The greatest gift we can give is the gift of our Catholic Faith. Without these essential evangelization programs and ministries, it becomes ever more difficult to enrich and grow our Faith.

Thank you to those who have supported the Annual Appeal. These essential programs could not happen without your generosity!

Crisis in Iraq

A college buddy of mine is missionary in Africa. He recently went to Iraq to help out the Catholic refugees. He has this to say:

"Tell the world of our suffering! You might not have luck with the White House. But tell the Christians in America!"

Dearest Praying Friends, We are safely in Istanbul. Thank you to all who prayed and gave so generously. Yesterday was a bit hairy, we came within a few miles of ISIS and the fighting. We began our journey early in the morning and arrived here at 3am.

Right now we're processing all that we saw and experienced firsthand. Honestly, we don't have the words at the moment. The suffering is so immense. The magnitude of the disaster is beyond comprehension.

Christians were given 48 hours to leave their homes. Some paid to stay or converted to Islam. They were all crucified, beheaded or shot. Those who left were stripped of all their possessions, allowed to leave with only the clothes on their backs. Now they have absolutely nothing and cannot return home. ISIS has destroyed their villages and placed landmines all around.

"The Americans are here! I told my people you would come! I told them! You believe in God. We believe in God! Americans no afraid die. This is a BIG encouragement for my little people." -- Mayor of Hawrysk

The Christians are not in camps. They have scattered to villages and family all across the region. The average village is overflowing with refugees. They need food. They have no clothes. They need heaters and cookers. It will soon be bitter cold. Relief is NOT getting to them.

These people are in total shock. They have lost everything. They want to go home and can't. Some were betrayed by their Muslim neighbors with whom they lived for generations. Their neighbors called in ISIS, giving their location away, to come and exterminate them. The hurt runs very deep. If you hug a refugee for more than 3 seconds, they break down and cry.

"Why save us from the mountains and villages just to starve to death now?"

What can we do? We can love the one in front of us. If "Christians" in America -- just a small percentage of us -- would love one refugee family, we could help them all. If churches will actually care and do something, we can bring light to the darkness, alleviate horrific suffering and advance the Kingdom in this region.

The crisis is so massive that one organization is not going to get it done. No chance. It's going to take a network of small front line relief operations. We've learned from our Katrina experience that small, grassroots is always better. Also, it's ideal to support the local Church in its ministry. Help them help themselves and their communities. In this way we are pouring into the local Church for the long term.

Right now the people are OPEN to the Gospel!!! Even in the midst of this incredible suffering, God is moving. The pastors are united like never before. God is appearing to the Muslims in dreams and visions. The displaced Christians have more boldness and are caring for Muslims and Yazidi with the little they have!

We are partnering with a group of local pastors who are working directly in the packed, suffering villages. $50 will feed a family for a month. $50 will buy a kerosene heater and cooker. They are desperate for clothes, especially winter clothes. The children need schools.

We are eager to tell the story in the U.S and then return as soon as possible. Our plan is to locate ourselves in one of the villages -- about six miles from the Mosul Dam -- and work with the emerging local Church network.  We will help on the front lines with this effort if you are willing to join us in what God is doing. Love One.

Love looks like something.  What does it look like from YOU to THEM? Please . . . we are on our knees begging for them.

And pray for the broken Body of Christ, our brothers and sisters in their time of need.

In His Love for the Least,

Jerry and Stacy
