BACKGROUND TO THE READINGS AT MASS TODAY First Reading : Exodus 20 : 1-17

4th March 2018 (Prayer Week 3)

"Which is your best commandment?"

The Israelites are three months journey into the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. Moses leads them to the region where he had been a shepherd and thus is an experienced guide. After two days of

into becoming the people of God. The Commandments speak of honouring God and living justly

with one another. They are inspiring and practical. God dictates the words, and later, in an amazing moment, gives Moses two tablets of stone on which the commandments are inscribed by the finger of God. These are the tablets smashed in anger by Moses, and when he receives the Commandments a second time (chapter 34) he himself does the inscribing. The people lost the handwriting of God through unfaithfulness . . .

Second Reading : 1 Corinthians 1 :22-25

10.00 am at St. Joseph's for Friends abroad

Paul stayed with the Corinthians, 50-52, and was their first Christian missionary. When Paul continued his travels Apollos became leader of the Church and seems to have won the people's favour because of his scholarship and eloquence - qualities much honoured amongst the

Greeks. Paul was hurt by the community's breaking into factions some favouring him, some Apollos, and he reminds them that they should be disciples of Christ: there need be no divisions.

Today's reading is a cry of frustration - human approaches to truth are so limited by those who look for miracles, those who admire strength, those who value learning. Paul bypasses these different approaches in order to offer a crucified Christ: foolishness by human judgment - God's ways are not our ways.

The driving out of the money-changers from the temple is an attack on greed; the expulsion of cattle and sheep suggests an end to animal sacrifices, and Jesus refers to himself as the new temple.

Note how the crowds want to marvel at 'signs', but Jesus does not trust shallow minds: he has come to reveal God's love and truth.

Dear People, We have heard sad news of an inspiring

Dear People,

There are still places available on the Saturday for the Eucharistic Congress in Liverpool, 7th-9th September.

Some people did express interest after previous notes in the parish newsletter but no commitments were made. The deadline is now 11th March. Please let me know if you would like to go, how you plan to travel, for how long (day or overnight) and I can ask for places. ...............................................................F..r..J..o..h..n.. Dear Fr John,

It was a relief to see Wales lose to England and Ireland, much as they deserved to win, of course, but it means that Pope Francis is safe for another year. Strange how the British Medical Journal could tell us that we lose a pope when Wales do well at rugby.

Yours sincerely, Rev O'Vatican
