Grade 2 Mathematics Overview: In Grade 2, instructional time should focus on four critical areas:

1. extending understanding of base-ten notation; 2. building fluency with addition and subtraction; 3. using standard units of measure; and 4. describing and analyzing shapes.

1st Quarter Overarching Learning Goals Unit 1: Building Fluency with Addition and Subtraction (Approx. 21 - 25 days)

Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. (2.OA.1) Add and subtract with 20. (2.OA.2)

Number and Operations in Base Ten Understand place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. (2.NBT.5, 2.NBT.9)

Unit 2: Using Place Value Understanding to Develop Addition and Subtraction Concepts (Approx. 16 - 18 days) Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. (2.OA.1) Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. (2.OA.3) Number and Operations in Base Ten Understand place value. (2.NBT.3) Understand place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. (2.NBT.5, 2.NBT.8, 2.NBT.9)

Standards for Mathematical Practice 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Assessments Formative assessment strategies will be used frequently in every lesson to gauge students' understanding and make adjustments to instruction accordingly. Summative assessment strategies will be used at the end of each lesson and unit to gauge students' mastery of standards and to plan for reteaching/intervention.
