Biology 1 Lecture

In-Class Assignment

You are in a deep sleep and dreaming that you were magically transformed into a beautiful, tall sunflower, just swaying in the sun and breeze. You reluctantly wake from your sleep knowing that you have to get to your biology class soon or else you will miss the quiz. You slowly open your eyes and try to roll out of bed when you realize that you cannot move at all. You take a better look around and…What the??!!..YIKES!!!! You really did turn into a tall sunflower swaying in the sun and breeze!! To make matters worse, you are starving because all you had for dinner the night before was one package of Top Ramen Noodles. First things first, you need to get some food and then worry about how you are going to explain to Janine why you missed the quiz. Fortunately, you’ve paid close attention in our biology class and know exactly what you need to do as a plant to get food. One catch…you must explain to your new plant body how to get this food (photosynthesize) and how do break down this food in order to produce energy for your cells (aerobic cellular respiration).

Label the diagram to tell your body:

1) The names of the two steps of photosynthesis.

2) The location of each stage within the chloroplast.

3) What you need to go into each stage and what comes out of each stage

(fill in the white boxes and white circles).

Now that you made some food for yourself, you then need to break that food down to make energy that your cells can use.

Label the diagram to tell your body:

1) The names of the four steps of cellular respiration.

2) The location of each stage. If in the mitochondria, state where in the mitochondria,

3) What goes into each stage and what comes out of each stage (fill in the white boxes and white circles).
