External Practica, Federal Correctional Institute – Morgantown, West Virginia

Duration: July 2007 – present

Supervisor: Edward Baker, Ph.D.

Duties: Provide individual assessment and therapeutic services to male inmates at this minimum security federal prison. Issues addressed include adjustment disorder, substance abuse, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, anger management, victim empathy, parenting skills, anxiety, depression, and bereavement. Provide group therapy for substance abuse, anger management, and stress management.

Graduate Student Therapist, WVU Geropsychology & Insomnia Clinic

Duties: Conduct assessment and cognitive-behavioral therapy for older adult clients receiving services for insomnia, depression, and other mental health issues at the WVU Dept. of Family Medicine and WVU Dept. of Psychology Quin Curtis Center. Provide individual supervision to first-year clinical psychology doctoral students on the clinical team. Participate in weekly team meetings.

Duties: Conducted and scored neuropsychological assessments for a variety of cases, including inpatient psychiatric evaluations and outpatient evaluations for thought disorders, dementia (Memory Disorders Clinic), head injury, seizure, pre-ECT, and independent medical evaluations. Observed group therapy on inpatient psychiatric care unit. Researched aspects of brain-behavior relations relevant to presenting cases, attended neurology grand rounds, and attended weekly neuropsychology case conference.

Duties: Completed 40 hours of training covering the psychology of domestic violence and rape situations, crisis interventions, victim advocacy, legal services such as protection orders, and employment of community resources. Apply this information to victims in a supportive counseling role through 24-hour community crisis hot-line. Completed over 250 hours of on-call volunteer work. Provide immediate crisis counseling and access to legal services and victims’ rights. Act as liaison to emergency services and shelter. Contact law enforcement and R/SACC enhanced advocate when necessary. Record data documenting nature of each call.

Undergraduate Honors Research, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Psychology Department

Research study examining the predictors of teenage social influence.

Duration: February 2003 – May 2004

Supervisor: Calvin P. Garbin, Ph.D.

Duties: Developed original research project to explore the relationships of teenage social skills in predicting teens’ influence on their peers. To gain a better understanding of the dynamics between positive behaviors, negative behaviors, and social influence, the project examined both positive and negative teenage social skills among a sample of 1,142 ninth grade students. Two questionnaires were used to assess teenage social skills, the Teenage Inventory of Social Skills (TISS) and the Sociometric and Friendship Questionnaire (SFQ). Multiple regression analyses were completed to analyze three models of prediction for the criterion of social influence. Results of SPSS analysis and implications were developed into an APA-style honors thesis research paper.

Undergraduate Research Assistant, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Psychology Department,

Family Violence & Injury Lab

Research study examining relationship between child sexual abuse and interpersonal functioning.

Duration: August 2002 – May 2003

Duties: Collected and organized data for a study investigating the association between child sexual abuse and past and current interpersonal functioning within pre-marital/dating relationships. Administered the project protocol to undergraduate subjects, oversaw the testing process, and participated in weekly team meetings. Guided research participants through informed consent, computer tutorial, and debriefing of computerized data collection. Collected data concerning participant characteristics. Recruited participants for second phase of study.

Undergraduate Research Assistant, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Latino Research Initiative

Longitudinal research evaluating the impact of college student mentoring program for Latino youth in Lincoln community.

Duration: September 2002 – July 2003

Duties: Administered youth assessments at local schools for evaluation of the Latino Achievement Mentoring Program, a community-based research project involved within the multidisciplinary Latino Research Initiative. Attended mentor meetings and program functions for mentors and mentee families to collect weekly mentoring logs and event evaluations. Assisted coordination of program events, such as mentee picnic and Family Day. Collected, entered, and checked quantitative and qualitative survey data from mentors and mentees. Prepared data for analysis using SPSS. Re-labeled variables, ran descriptive statistics on data sets, and completed alterations of syntax code. Devised a coding system for qualitative data. Completed background research in preparation for research articles presenting findings.
