How to Use a Cane

Fitting a cane

? Stand up straight.

? The top of the cane should be level with your wrist when your arm is resting by your side.

? When you hold your cane, your elbow should bend about 20 to 25 degrees.

? Hold the cane on your good side. It should be opposite the side that needs support.

Walking

The cane and the bad leg should swing and hit the ground at the same time.

? To start, place the cane one small stride ahead. Step forward with your bad leg at the same time.

? Then, step with the good leg.

Using the stairs

Use the railing, if there is one. You may need to switch the cane to your other hand.

Going up the stairs

Holding the cane on your good side, step up with the good leg first. (The cane stays on the same level as the bad leg.) Then, step up with the cane and the bad leg at the same time.

Going down the stairs

First, put the cane on the step, then the bad leg and last, the good leg.

Remember: Up with the good, down with the bad.

Going upstairs: Lead with your good leg

Going downstairs: Lead with your bad leg

Tips

? For curbs, use the same method as for the stairs--up with the good and down with the bad. Keep your feet as close to the curb as you can. (If needed, your therapist may show you another way to go up and down curbs.)

? For ramps, take small steps.

? Remove scatter rugs, electric cords and anything that may cause you to fall.

? In the bathroom, use a raised toilet seat, a tub seat, grab bars and non-slip bath mats.

? Clean up spills right away.

? Arrange your house to keep the items you need handy.

? Use a backpack, fanny pack or other bag to carry things around.

? Check the tip of your cane often for wear and tear.
