2004-2005 National Distinguished Chapter of the Year

For the second straight year, the Society of Black Scientists and Engineers at Stanford University won the highly coveted National Distinguished Chapter of the Year award that is given to the one chapter that has excelled above all others in the academic enhancement of its members, in scholarship, leadership and in the overall facilitation of programs and activities to achieve NSBE’s overall mission. Many thanks to Phillip Arowosegbe, who coordinated the Chapter Development Packet, the entire E-board, and every member who has participated in a program, event, tutoring and those who attended FRC and Nationals. The award comes with a $1000 cash award as well as a Dell Computer including a Printer, Fax, Copier & Scanner. We also won the National T.O.R.C.H. (Technical Outreach Community Help) Community Service Initiative Award for the Spring Term 2004-2005 and our PCI Try-Math-A-Lon Team finished 3rd in the Nation. We have established SBSE as the premiere chapter in the country and if we can continue our hard work next year we can achieve the unheard of 3-peat…a dynasty in the making.

SBSE BBQ

Great food, music, basketball, volleyball, water balloon fight and Cha’s injury

A big thank you to Phillip Arowosegbe for organizing a great BBQ at Manzanita on Saturday, May 7th. Everyone enjoyed their fill of chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, cookies, chips and soda as we gathered to relax and celebrate another Distinguished year. The weather could not have been better as we played volleyball, basketball, ate and listened to music provided by Myles. The real craziness began when the water balloons were brought out and it was every man for himself. During a scramble for a bucket of water Cha suffered a cut above his eye but he is fine now. Overall, the BBQ was a huge success and we thank everyone who came out to celebrate with us.

Meet the 2005-2006 SBSE Executive Board!

Secretary

Brittney Fraser

I am returning to the E-board as your Vice-President after serving as Cultural Responsibility Chair My sophomore year. The Intel Clubhouse is an opportunity for SBSE’s members to form a bond with the children that regularly go to the East Palo Alto Boys and Girls Club. This bond is created through a number of projects that allow the students to share their knowledge with one another. Projects at the Intel Clubhouse include a Black History Month Symposium that will display several students’ creativity, a Remote Control Car project that will allow students to learn the basics about automobile mechanics, a LEGO Mindstorm Contest which will help the students build team work skills, and the Tech Challenge Competition that will afford the students the opportunity to compete against other students in the area. The students also take part in weekly contests that range from paper airplane contests to building the tallest building out of paper and tapes.
