*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

You Are My Joy

You are my joy, joy like no other. Joy like no other reaches to me.

In the fullness of our joy, in the power of your name, you lift me

up, you lift me up. Unfailing joy, stronger than mountains,

deeper than oceans, reaches to me.

*THE ILLUMINATION OF ADVENT

Russell, Jennifer, Maggie and Thomas Brewton

Usually when we think of joy, we think of a light heartedness,

giddiness, maybe even a sense of silliness.

We sing, ※I*ve got the joy, joy, joy down in my heart§, and it

feels so childlike. It hard to take &joy* seriously, but here it

is, in the middle of Advent. It is a word to give shape to our

preparation for the coming of the holy child, a word to think

on, to ponder, to build on. It is a word from God in the midst

of a dark season to lift us to begin to be ready to receive the

light to come.

In a time long ago, in a land far away when a different

language was used in the church, this day was called Gaudete

Sunday, and a rose candle was put in the wreath to mark its

presence. The word means &Rejoice*, the response we make

when joy is realized in our lives.

As scripture says, ※Rejoice in the Lord always: again I will say

rejoice.§ Even in the midst of the dark God is with us,

Immanuel. Thanks be to God.

Gaudete was usually on the Sunday closest to the longest day

of the year. A time when darkness should prevail or

overwhelm, but we hold to the joy of the Lord. We see the

light at the end of the night as a promise. And our joy is in the

Lord.

So we light a candle for joy this day. We are pilgrims on a

journey to God, making our way to God and helping others to

do so as well. We seek peace for our souls, rooted in the

unshakable conviction that God loves us and wants our good.

Christmas Mission Project

This holiday season at SUMC we will be supporting the Prisma Health

Children*s Hospital Child Life Holiday Market. Donations are used to

set up a ※store§ for inpatient families, and parents/caregivers are

provided with tickets to redeem for gifts. The Holiday Market enables

parents/caregivers to ※shop§ for holiday gifts without having to leave

the hospital. The Child Life department assists children from birth thru

the teenage years so there is a wide-range of shopping opportunities 每

the infection control policy requires that all donations must be NEW

with original tags and/or packaging. A list of suggested items can be
