May News and Notes from the Admin Team

A big hello everyone! We are hoping spring is finally here! As we say a final goodbye to a long and snowy winter, we can reflect on a few events that have been happening and look ahead to a warmer and sunnier month of May!

Throughout this year we have been working on building school community and respect. To support this goal, we have had several presenters work with our students. Ralph Cervi finished his presentations on Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying. Robb Nash provided his musical message about making good choices and Chris Koch presented on tolerance. Different classes have had anti-smoking presentations and other students have had sessions on Safely Crossing Train Tracks and Roadways. Our Double Trouble student group will lead HSS Students through a "White Out Day" to bring understanding to the dangers of drinking and driving. Several students are also making a difference by mentoring other students in our Peer Mentorship Program. Another school goal is to improve student engagement as we focus on literacy skills. Teachers and students have been engaged all year in several strategies to improve their reading comprehension. Recently we had a very successful Spelling Bee fundraiser and assembly. Thanks to all of you who donated funds to our Middle School programs. We raised over $5000! Congratulations to Ashley Stevenson in Grade 7 on being the top speller!

In Sports, Badminton just finished up and athletes are sharpening their cleats for Track and Field season. The Bands have been very active with presentations, festivals and trips. Make sure you attend our Year End Band Concert on May 29th. Several staff and students continue their efforts to bring forth a wonderful drama production, Alice @ Wonderland. Make sure you get your tickets for May 20th and 21st. The High School Leadership students have been doing a great job planning many student activities and a recent Spring Formal Dance. We look forward to another High School Student Success Assembly coming up in early June.

Hugh Sutherland School has exciting news; Carstairs has waited a long time, and finally... we are having a Grand Opening for our new gym! The Grand Opening is set for May 7th at 10:45 am and all members of the Hugh Sutherland School Community are invited to share in the celebration! The school has worked closely with the Town of Carstairs on this project and the intention is that this gym will be a community gym for the school and the entire community. The new gym facility will boast provincial caliber sports events, excellent fitness instruction, community events utilization, band concerts, and theatre productions.

Once again PAT Part A exams are starting next week in Grade 6 and Grade 9 English. Please stay in regular communication with your child's teachers in order to ensure learning success.

Our next School Council meeting is on Tuesday, May 20th. You are welcome to come out and provide input into the school through this important committee.

I certainly appreciate the parents, students, school staff and community who all work tirelessly to make Hugh Sutherland School the wonderful school it is. If ever you have any questions, please call us anytime or drop in to the school.

With HSS pride, Mr. George Thomson and Mrs. Valerie Clapp Principal and Vice PrincipalwowfwH.huugghhsuStuhtehrlearnldasnchdooSlc.chaool

Measles Outbreak Update

As you are all well aware, measles is in the NEWS. We have not had measles cases reported in our area yet. However, Carstairs is considered to be part of Calgary zone.

If you have anyone that you suspect has symptoms of measles ie. high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, followed by a rash (typically beginning behind the ears) the message to them is:

STAY AT HOME. Do not visit any clinic, hospital or Public Health Office. Call Health Link at 1-866-408-5465.

Fostering our safe and caring culture

A message from the Superintendent

Chinook's Edge is highly regarded for our efforts to surpass safety standards in our schools, and exceptional attention to safety is practiced throughout the division every day. As well, surveys of students, parents and staff also show high praise for the safe and caring culture in our schools. That said, a new Safe and Caring Working group is striving to push these priorities even further.

The group is comprised of school administrators, family school wellness staff, teachers and central office staff. They have worked together throughout the year and determined three streams of work to be accomplished in Chinook's Edge, from assessing the effectiveness of the social emotional learning programs that are in place in our schools to gathering information about the impacts of social media on our students. We are very proud and enthusiastic about the efforts being made through the Safe and Caring Working Group, because we know that feeling safe and cared for is the basis for all other learning to take place.

Kurt Sacher, Superintendent

It is very important that parents report all absences and lates to the school office at 403-337-3326.

Please come join us!

After an incredible amount of hard work and commitment from many different people, this month we are pleased to announce the opening of our new gym!

Please come join us Wednesday May 7, 2014

at 11:00 am

to celebrate the opening of this project.

All members of the community are welcome to attend.

Donations are still accepted towards this project.

The Breakfast Program is busier than ever! Every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, we provide choices of fruit, yogurt, porridge, cereal, toast, milk and juice to all of our students. Wednesdays we have the Porridge Truck that offers porridge at no cost and a variety of menu items for a small cost. The cost to run this worthwhile program is about $500 per month and is run by volunteers and relies on donations of food or cash. Many thanks to all of the volunteers that bring it all together ? parents, teachers, students and community members. If you would like to become involved in any way in this worthwhile program, please contact the school.

Researchers found that teenagers who fail to eat a good breakfast are more likely to become obese and develop high blood sugar in adulthood. "Study after study shows that kids who eat breakfast function better," Dr. Schneider says. "They do better in school, and have better concentration and more energy."
