Influenza:What you need to know

Influenza (also called flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Flu viruses are spread in respiratory droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. They usually spread from person to person, though sometimes people become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

Symptoms of flu include: Fever Headache Extreme tiredness Dry cough Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Muscle aches

The best way to prevent the flu is to be immunized against the flu. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends Influenza vaccination for children 6 months through 18 years of age. Vaccine is available as nasal spray or injection. Immunizations are available through physicians, public health, and at many local sites. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May, so it is not too late to be immunized!

Other ways to help stop the spread of flu viruses: Wash hands often Stay home when you are sick Avoid close contact with people who are sick Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

People need to get plenty of sleep and physical activity, drink water and eat good food to help them stay healthy in the winter and all year. Be proactive in protecting your health! Discuss the flu vaccine with your health care provider to determine if it is right for you and your family. For more information, please go to or contact your healthcare provider.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!

The Roosevelt and Kaleidoscope staff members would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents that volunteered to help make the "Staff Appreciation Luncheon" a huge and wonderful success last Tuesday. The homemade candies and cookies were almost too good to eat.

All the time and effort put into the luncheon, especially this time of year when "time" is in short supply truly reflects the devoted and caring parents we have at Roosevelt and Kaleidoscope.

A special thank you goes out to Marilou and Glenn Brown for arranging the luncheon, as well as the organization efforts behind the scenes. Marilou and Glenn also had several "elves" to assist them with set-up and take-down.

Thank you again!

PARENT ADVISRY COUNCIL

Wow! We are almost to winter break and then the end of the 1st semester! We have had great support from our ROO and KA parents. Our school is a better place due to our parent involvement.

Thanks to everyone that volunteered in the library, garden, with staff appreciation, the Book Fair, and chaperoning dances. Jean and Joe Santonato, Jean Kenevan, Michael Schaden, and Kendall Fischer braved a cold Friday night in December to chaperone the last dance of 2013. Be sure to watch for more opportunities coming up in 2014!

Remember to mark your calendars for our next meeting: Thursday, January 9th, at 6:00 P.M. We hope to see you there!!!
