Starbucks - NEXT Lighting
Corporate Headquarters
? CASE STUDY
THE CLIENT
Starbucks Center
Seattle, WA
THE NEED
A historic building constructed in 1912, Starbucks Center is the largest multitenant office building in Seattle, WA and is home to Starbucks' worldwide headquarters. Starbucks sought to save energy, improve light quality and illuminance, and eliminate mercury, all while maintaining their existing custom fixtures and attaining a high internal rate of return on the project. In addition, the building had several different existing lighting control systems that Starbucks wanted to continue to use with its new lights.
THE SOLUTION
Starbucks and the building owner--Nitze-Stagen--retrofit the fluorescent fixtures in the 2 million square foot building with NEXTLamps(tm), reducing total wattage and lamp counts, as well as eliminating one-third of the fixtures in the warehouse areas while increasing lighting levels. The NEXTLamps were seamlessly connected to the existing lighting control systems. In addition, NEXTSense(tm) daylighting and occupancy sensors were installed throughout the multi-story parking garage and warehouse areas. NEXT Lighting's team supported Starbucks in maximizing local utility incentives as well as available energy-efficiency tax credits.
THE RESULT
? $304k utility rebate (Year 1) ? $1.8M projected cash savings ? 50% lighting energy savings ? 50% CO2e reduction from lighting ? No mercury (LEED credits) ? Increased color rendering (CRI) from 70 to 84 ? Integrated with existing lighting control
systems (including Enlighted and WattStopper) ? Natural light spectrum for partners' well-being
