Healthy vs. Unhealthy Have you ever wonder how much it would cost to purchase every single thing off the McDonald’s menu? What is your guess 2, 3, maybe even 4 hundred dollars… well guess what your wrong? That’s right, the actual price to buy the whole entire McDonalds menu is $141.33, I could buy that with one paycheck. I make 8 dollars an hour and I work for 5 hours and I could buy the whole menu with just ONE pay check. Now think about how much it would cost you to buy every single thing off the Panera Bread menu? While calculating half of the menu I realized that I was already at over $141.33 dollars, in fact I was exactly at $851.37 dollars. That’s just half of the menu but why is it that the McDonald’s menu is ten times cheaper than Panera Bread? On top of that question I would like to know is the food that is cheaper even 100% editable? Is McDonalds menu being cheaper effect the economy that we live in? What is the reasoning for healthy food costing more, my opinion I feel that healthier food should cost less being that it is good for you and your body. Whole Foods the holy grail for purchasing all healthy editable food, or so we think my next question is…is all Whole Food produces really “Whole Foods”? How do you know if a product that you purchase is actually healthy like it may claim to be? Finally, what could be done to make healthier foods more affordable then unhealthy foods? All these questions about the same topic yet why isn’t this topic not as talked about as much as other topics? How come the answers are here but yet nothing has changed nor as anything accrued on the increase of high calories, high fat, and high sodium unhealthy products? There are answers out there and I am ready to give them all in this topic that means a lot to me. First one on the agenda if you haven’t already guessed it or figured it out that the difference between McDonalds and Panera Bread is the food. For those who may not know what Panera Bread is, it is a restaurant that sells fresh healthy foods/entrees with fresh cut fruits, fresh picked greens, and fresh baked wheat bread. Some entrees that Panera Bread serves are: Sandwiches- “Season Roasted Turkey Cranberry Flatbread (one 310 Cal / two 630 Cal) Roasted turkey raised without antibiotics, baby spinach, cranberry mostarda and garlic and herb cream cheese spread on Whole Grain Flatbread” Panera Bread menu. Soups-“Broccoli Cheddar (230–900 Cal) Chopped broccoli, shredded carrots and select seasonings simmered in a velvety smooth cheese sauce.” Panera Bread menu. Salads- “Fuji Apple with Chicken (half 280 Cal / whole 570 Cal) Chicken raised without antibiotics, arugula, romaine, kale and radicchio blend, vine-ripened tomatoes, red onions, toasted pecan pieces, Gorgonzola and apple chips tossed in sweet white balsamic vinaigrette.” Panera Bread menu. Panera Kids- “Mac & Cheese (470 Cal) Shell pasta in a blend of creamy cheese sauce and tangy Vermont white cheddar cheese.” Panera Bread menu. I’ve highlighted the calories to show how each item that I’ve copied was healthy and good food choices. Being that I eat there I can defiantly say that the whatever entrée you get is very filling. Only problem is the extremely high prices, no matter which entrée that I purchase I always end up spending around 16-24 dollars. Why you may ask well looking through all the research that I’ve gone through it all came down to this, in the article, “Here’s the surprising restaurant where people rack up big tabs,” it states that Panera Bread is the quote “he third-most popular chain, behind Starbucks (which is far and away the top breakfast spot) and McDonald’s, respectively.” The food is refreshing, it feels great to it but the prices are super expensive being that the whole restaurant surrounds itself with healthy food produces. Now let’s look into the McDonalds menu Burgers- Sweet BBQ Bacon Burger on Artisan Roll (750 calories), Bacon & Cheese Sirloin Third Pound Burger (810 calories), Quarter Pounder Cheddar Bacon Onion (770 calories), Denali Big Mac (850 calories). McDonalds Small French Fries- (230 calories) breakdown 44% fat, 51% carbs, 5% protein, McDonalds Chicken McNuggets- 4 pieces (193 calories). McDonalds is okay until you actually sit down and do the research, and watch all those horrible documentaries about what is really inside of the McDonalds house of lies. In the article “What’s in a Big Mac Will YOU eat a McDonald’s again after reading this?” While reading this article the article makes harsh comments like comparing the sweet taste of a burger to a horrible drug known as “cocaine.” The items that could be purchased and eaten is bad for your body, yet we still eat it but why? Well the answer is broken down is three simple words, McDonalds is cheap, convenient, and tasty. Throughout the years the obesity rate in people in America has increased throughout the years. Throughout the years many people have complained about the rise of obesity in adults, but mainly in children. The shocking result to the many complaints that many Americans have shouted from the top of there longs, have yet to make a change. Well let me change what I said, it has made some changes in the school districts, like for example when I started high school the vending machines were filled with hot chips, candy, chocolate bars etc,. Which is a huge problem being that all those snacks were making tons of students that attend my high school fat, but during my last two years of high school HISD made the choice to take out all the unhealthy snacks in the vending machines. They then replaced the fatting chips, candies, and chocolate bars with more organic items that were both healthy and good. Unfortunately, the problem with fast food being cheaper then healthier foods produces has not changed. Besides the fact that McDonald’s stating that they have changed the types food they are serving which is better for your body. My thing is nothing is going to get better unless someone can actually make a change in the unhealthy food world that we all live in right now. We all surround ourselves with food, food controls the way we feel, it makes people feel better, it is the main energy source that is needed. Your body is your tempol so why would you ruin it by eating such bad foods? ................
