Schooling the Competition: Teacher Receives Award for

Dedication to Education

by Astyn Kennedy

Last school year, our very own Mike Rountree was nominated and awarded the Texas Rural Education Association (TREA) Teacher of the Year.

"I am very happy for him, and he is very deserving of this award," Spanish teacher Terri Nies said.

People from all over the state can be eligible for this award after a nomination from administration and an application. This is most likely why Rountree was so surprised when he received this award.

"It was a shock because it was a state award, not a local or regional award," Rountree said. "I didn't think I would get an award like this in 100 years."

However, the ability to say he received this award wasn't the only perk of winning it. There were also conferences throughout the summer which he attended with many big events happening for him throughout.

"After winning the award, I was the keynote speaker at a summer conference held in Fort Worth on June 22," Rountree said. "I was also able to sit in a lot of educational meetings with people from all over the state."

On top of this, the experience provided Rountree with a new, positive outlook on his job.

"I think that this award helped to give me a new passion and energy in teaching, as well as the motivation to try new things in education," Rountree said.

Congratulations Mr. Rountree for winning this amazing award!

Avery is the daughter of James and Kiki Connelly. She participates in golf, Junior Lynxettes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and is also currently the secretary for student council.

After high school, Avery plans on attending Tarleton and majoring in Biology with hopes of becoming a pharmacist.

"Biology has always been easy for me,"Avery said. "I also like helping people. Being a pharmacist seemed like an obvious choice."

During her down time, she enjoys golfing, watching Netflix, and hanging out with her friends.

"She's a really good person," senior Angela Flores said.

According to Avery, her best memories of high school are being able to attend regional golf three years in a row.

"Playing the sport I love is what makes attending regional golf three years in a row exciting," Avery said.

As Avery finishes her last year, she has some lasting advice for the underclassmen.

"Keep going," Avery said. "No matter how hard it may get, it will always get better."

On September 17, Robert Hackenson Jr. came to SHS to talk to students about the dangers of social media.

"It was fascinating watching him do his magic tricks while teaching us at the same time," freshman Jesus Marquez said.

People are mean on social media more often because they are protected and don't run the risk of getting physically hurt because they avoid face-to-face interactions.

"It was important to know the dangers of bullying online," freshman Gene Mendez said.

He discussed `sexting' on the internet and how easy it is to meet a person who may seem real when they Pchaontorbey apilxlaybaby.ecom someone else intending to take advantage of innocent people. Examples include money, human trafficking, or explicit pictures.

"I thought it was educational, but he made it fun to listen to," sophomore Man Womble said.

Lastly he spoke about how social media is statistically making people more depressed and anxious. He emphasized the need to give more time to our lives

instead of being in front of a screen.

"I thought it was worthwhile and especially entertaining to watch," business teacher Roger Morton said.

FFA members also gained experience necessary

for the next few years in FFA.

"It was a great opportunity for our freshmen

members to meet other students in our district,"

ag teacher Hannah Cavazos said. "They were

able to learn leadership skills while having a

little bit of fun."

As if nothing could top the excitement of

missing a day of classes, that is not so. In fact,

new FFA members were able to gather to

socialize, learn, and play games.

"All the activities we did were really fun,"

freshman Jeb Garnett said.

Many unique opportunities are found at

Greenhand Camp as it continues to be a

worthwhile trip for new FFA members each year.

Leaping into the Learning Lab

by Astyn Kennedy

A newer addition to our school this year is the area in the library known as the Lynx Learning Lab. Within this lab, students are encouraged to work independently in classes specifically designed to further them into their chosen career paths.

"The purpose of the lab is Ptohootofbfey classes to students that aren't normally offered to students here at Spearman," facilitator Bonnie Morton said.

These classes, which range from music technology to law courses, allow participating students to engage and learn in an environment that encourages their individual career choices.

"I find it easier to do things independently and online," sophomore Nathan Ruga said. "It allows me to focus on the things that I really want to be doing in school."

This lab opens up many different doors for students and gives them a place to focus on the things they want to do in the future.

"I believe the lab gives more opportunities for students who want to take classes more geared toward their career goals," Morton said. "In the future, I hope that more students utilize the lab and the opportunities it has to offer."

Raging Raiders

by Marissa Gonzalez A currently trending topic on the internet is the Area 51 raid. On September 20, millions planned on attending the Area 51 raid because they want to find out what really goes on there. Is it really a government training range? Or is it a secret alien facility? Million dollar questions. The person behind the whole raid is a man named Matty Roberts. He initially created this event on Facebook as a joke. Then raid memes began... However, some took this event all too seriously. Many conspiracy theorists believe that the entire event is a scheme created by the government. One popular theory involves this Matty Roberts. Some believe he was hired by the government to help make this happen due to the world becoming overpopulated. If people were to actually go to Area 51, by law, the government has the right to shoot. Right? Maybe the governmentPihsotuo sbyinpigxatbhayi.csom "raid" to help get the population under control. Unlikely. This isn't China. Many people are certainly curious about what goes on in Area 51. Who knows... maybe there truly are crazy things hidden behind those barbed wire gates. If this raid is successful, then the truth will be revealed... maybe.

Lynx Place 3rd

at Canadian

by Charles Pearson

The Lynx and Lynxette cross-country teams ran on September 14 in Canadian. The girls placed third, and there was one medalist on both varsity teams.

"I don't know what to say about a cross-country meet," junior Mia Pipkin said.

Lynxette medalists were Mia Pipkin and Maggie Davis. The Lynx medalist was Sid de Leon.

"There's a reason they call me Tiger, baby" Sid said. We give the Lynx and Lynxettes all our support on further endeavors.

Kicking up Grass

by Jocelyn Garcia

On September 13, the Lynx played against the Sunray Bobcats. The Lynx showed their skills by beating the bobcats with a final score of 40-8.

"We came out healthy," coach Michael Lozano said. "That in itself is a good thing."

Again, the lynx took their skills to the field against the Stratford Elks in their home territory. Sadly, their skills were not enough to defeat them, and the final score ended 54-0.

"I know the Lynx lost," sophomore Cynthia Arreola said. "But we can learn from our mistakes and do better next time."

Hopefully the Lynx can defeat the West Texas Comanches tonight on our home turf.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to bounce back after last week's loss," freshman Cason Mackie said. "We are looking forward to playing another great team."
