NEWS YOU CAN USE

READING / WRITING:

We will be reading Help! I’m a Prisoner in the Library. The genre is realistic fiction. We will also be working on writing directions and following step by step instructions in making something. Students will be learning the importance of writing clear directions. In Language Arts we will be working on root words.

No reading log this month, but encourage your student to read daily.

Recipe book report is due on or before Tues. Dec. 18th. Students should reading several recipes; we will be learning the purpose for reading and follow directions.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We are talking about Holiday Traditions as we are leading up to Christmas. Also, we are going to talking about internet safety as that is now part of the 3rd grade curriculum.

Next Friday the students need to bring in items like water bottles, boxes, pop bottles, paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, any other recyclable items. They also need to bring in a roll of packing tape or duct tape. The last week before break the kids will be using those items to make something in class. They will be working in groups of 3 in class.

MATH:

This week the students worked on time. They were reading a clock, and given information figure out when something started, ended and how long it took. Elapsed time is a difficult concept for the students. On Monday they will be taking their Math SCA #2. This will be over, money, time, timelines and some graphing.

For the rest of the month of December we will be reviewing some concepts the students have not mastered and starting graphing. There are some fun activities we do with graphing. There may be a few days the students are asked to bring something home. Keep an eye on the planners.

Please make sure your child is doing their math fact practice nightly.

SPELLING:

Spelling skill this week will cover homophones. Students will have to understand the meaning of each homophone too. Test on Thursday, Dec. 13th.

Visit spelling city for extra practice.

DECEMBER SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS

December Book Orders will be placed this weekend.**If you would like for the order to be a gift, feel free to email me and left me know I will be happy to hide it from your child. We can figure out how to get it to your child without them knowing.**

HOMEWORK

There will be a homework packet next week, but not the last week before break. Please check with your child to make sure they are turning in their homework. As the fun activities are happening that last week the students who have missing homework will be completing that before they will participate in the fun activities.

3rd GRADE CHRISTMAS MUSICAL

In Music class the students have been working hard to put together a music program for Christmas. Mrs. Mesmer does an amazing job with all of the programs that she puts on and I’m sure this will be no different. On the green paper it gave directions for how the students can get on Mrs. Mesmer’s website to hear all of the music and practice. As we all know practice makes perfect. The students will be performing at the high school on Tuesday, Dec. 11th. Please mark your calendars. The students will need to be at the high school between 5:45 and 6:00 that night and the show will start at 6:30. We look forward to seeing all of you.

DECEMBER

BIRTHDAYS

December Birthday Celebration is Friday, Dec. 7th.

Dec. 4 – Gabrielle Kennedy

Dec. 16 – Matthew Naugle

MRS. CAIN

Friday, Dec. 14th, will be Mrs. Cain’s last day with us.  She has been student teaching in math and social studies since October and will be greatly missed!

We are planning a surprise “Going Away” party for her on that day and would like to present her with a  gift basket of teacher supplies/gift cards to get her started in her first year of teaching and to thank her for her hard work.  If you would like to donate any items for the gift basket, it would be greatly appreciated!  I have included a list below of some ideas for donations.  Please remember that this is a surprise!  If you send in any items, please remind your child to give them to Mrs. Hamrick so we can keep it a secret from Mrs. Cain.

Ideas for Gift Basket:

·Gift cards to restaurants/stores (she lives in the Akron area, so chain restaurants/businesses would probably be best – Starbucks, Subway, Target, etc.)

·Gift cards to Office Max or another office supply store or Creative Curriculum.

·“Teacher” supplies – post-it notes, colored pens, stickers, notepads, Sharpie markers, bulletin board materials, etc.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks in advance for helping us wish Mrs. Cain the best as she begins her teaching career!
